Indian equity markets saw heavy trading activity on March 9, with several banking, telecom and energy stocks among the most actively traded on the National Stock Exchange of India, according to exchange data.
The broader market declined sharply during the morning session. The BSE Sensex fell nearly 2,500 points, or more than 3%, to an intraday low of 76,424. The Nifty 50 dropped over 750 points, or more than 3%, to 23,697 during the session, according to Reuters.

The decline in domestic equities came amid rising crude oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran, Reuters reported.


Vodafone Idea Among Most Active Stocks

Vodafone Idea Limited was among the most traded stocks by volume on the NSE. Around 23 crore shares of the company changed hands by 11:30 am on March 9, according to exchange data.

The stock declined nearly 5% during the morning session, extending losses for a second consecutive trading day. In a filing dated March 6, the company informed exchanges that Gautam Pendse, Head of the Internal Audit Team, resigned with effect from the close of business hours on March 6, 2026.

YES Bank's Shares Experienced Robust Trading Volumes

The bank also saw substantial trading activity on the NSE. The stock fell more than 4% during the session, according to exchange data.

In a disclosure dated March 6, the bank stated that its board approved the appointment of Vinay Muralidhar Tonse as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for a three-year term starting April 6, 2026. The appointment follows approval from the Reserve Bank of India.

The bank said the change will take effect after the current MD and CEO, Prashant Kumar, demits office on April 5, 2026.

Suzlon Energy Hits 52-Week Low

Suzlon Energy was another heavily traded stock on the NSE on March 9. More than 4 crore shares changed hands during the session, according to exchange data.
The stock fell 4.5% and touched a fresh 52-week low of ₹38.19 during morning trade, extending its decline for the second consecutive session.

Other Actively Traded Stocks

Other stocks among the most actively traded on the NSE included Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Tata Steel, Jupiter Wagons, and HDFC Bank, according to exchange data.

Exchange-traded funds tracking gold and silver, including products managed by Tata and Nippon India, also recorded high trading volumes during the session.

Trading activity on March 9 reflected increased volatility in domestic markets as benchmark indices declined sharply and several high-volume stocks recorded significant price movements, according to NSE data.
