Auto stocks were witnessing a rally on Monday after the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) announced strong retail sales numbers in June. This helped the Nifty Auto index move up more than 1% during the trading session.
The sector outperformed the broader market as the sales numbers revealed by FADA witnessed an increase of 21.8% YoY to 2.6 million in June, registering the best June month ever.
Nifty Auto Index Advances
The Nifty Auto index gained over 1%, recovering from losses in the previous session. Buying interest was visible across the sector, with 14 of the index’s 15 constituents trading in positive territory.
TVS Motor share price emerged as the top performer, rising more than 2% during the session. Bajaj Auto share price also gained around 2%, while Eicher Motors, UNO Minda, Tube Investments of India and Mahindra & Mahindra advanced between 1% and 1.5%.
Maruti Suzuki India share price, Bharat Forge share price, Ashok Leyland share price and Exide Industries share price also traded higher, reflecting optimism following the latest sales data.
Passenger Vehicle Sales Reach Record Level
According to FADA, passenger vehicle retail sales climbed 28.6% year-on-year to 410,853 units in June. The industry body also reported that total vehicle registrations reached 2.6 million units during the month.
The data highlighted continued strength in consumer demand despite higher ownership costs. FADA said passenger vehicle sales were supported by sustained buying across multiple fuel categories, including petrol, CNG, hybrid and electric models.
The latest figures also come at a time when higher crude oil price levels have influenced fuel costs, encouraging greater adoption of alternative-fuel vehicles. Demand patterns have gradually shifted as buyers look for options with lower running expenses.
Two-Wheeler Sales Maintain Growth Momentum
Retail sales of two-wheelers rose 21.2% year-on-year to 1.8 million units during June, according to FADA. Electric two-wheelers accounted for 10.6% of total sales, crossing the double-digit mark for the first time.
The industry body also noted that the share of alternative-fuel passenger vehicles has increased following higher domestic fuel prices linked to movements in global crude oil price trends.
Last month, Maruti Suzuki stated that bookings for its CNG vehicles had increased by 40% after fuel price revisions, reflecting growing consumer preference for lower operating costs.
Sales Data Drives Sectoral Optimism
The retail sales in June have already given the market a glimpse of future demand trends, coming ahead of the earnings season. The robust sales performance of passenger cars and two-wheelers, along with growing uptake of vehicles using alternate fuel sources, helped automobile sector and auto ancillaries stocks to gain momentum. It is now time for investors to keep their eyes on earnings and sales trends.
