Summary:

Daily derivatives volume on the BSE fell post the implementation of CAS, affecting brokerage equities due to concerns over the effect on trading from the new closing price system.

Shares of brokerage firms came under pressure on August 7 after BSE derivatives data showed a sharp decline in trading turnover following the introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS). Angel One share price fell as much as 2.5% during intraday trade, while Motilal Oswal share price declined about 1% as investors tracked changes in derivatives volumes after the revised closing price framework took effect.

The latest figures indicate lower participation across several trading categories during the Sensex weekly futures and options expiry on August 6, prompting market participants to evaluate whether the new settlement process has temporarily affected trading activity.

Turnover Declines Across Key Trading Segments

BSE data showed that foreign institutional investor (FII/FPI) derivatives turnover declined to ₹19,00,755.72 crore on August 6 from ₹26,27,935 crore recorded on July 30.

Activity from proprietary traders also weakened. Turnover in this segment fell to ₹2,33,49,282.97 crore from ₹4,86,27,141.21 crore over the same period.

The decline has coincided with the implementation of CAS, although it remains too early to establish whether the lower volumes represent a temporary adjustment or a sustained shift in trading behaviour. Angel One share price and Motilal Oswal share price remained under pressure during the session as investors reacted to the latest turnover data.

New Closing Auction Changes Settlement Process

The Closing Auction Session became operational earlier this week for stocks with listed derivatives contracts. Under the revised framework, exchanges conduct a dedicated 20-minute auction beginning at 3:15 pm after the regular trading session ends.

During this period, market participants submit buy and sell orders, while order entry closes at a randomly selected time between 3:28 pm and 3:30 pm. The closing price is then determined through an auction process designed to maximise executable order volume.

Previously, closing prices for eligible securities were calculated using the weighted average of trades executed during the final 30 minutes of continuous trading. Stocks that do not have futures and options contracts continue to follow the earlier methodology.

Initial Volatility Draws Market Attention

The advent of CAS has led to larger moves in the benchmarks at the end of the session, especially for the Nifty, and the gap between closing levels on the NSE and BSE is also noteworthy.

According to the National Stock Exchange, both exchanges use their own order book, and this makes it possible for the closing price of individual shares to be different across the two exchanges. Consequently, even the benchmark indices can have different closing moves under the new system.

Unlike continuous trading, where the traders get the live bids and offers, it is not available in the auction stage.

Market Participants Monitor Trading Patterns

The revised framework has been introduced to strengthen price discovery and improve the execution of large institutional orders through an auction-based closing process. As per reports, market participants expect trading patterns to stabilise as more investors become familiar with the system.

Kotak Mutual Fund said in a note to investors that temporary pricing dislocations may persist during the initial phase of implementation but are expected to moderate as participation increases. Market participants will continue tracking derivatives turnover and brokerage stocks in the coming sessions to assess whether activity normalises under the new closing auction framework.
