India recorded its highest monthly addition of demat accounts in four months during June, with retail participation gaining momentum as strong gains in broader equity markets encouraged fresh investor interest.
According to data released by Central Depository Services (India) Ltd. (CDSL) and National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL), investors opened a combined 25.7 lakh new demat accounts in June. The figure was the highest since February 2026 when 28.1 lakh accounts were added. It also marked an increase from 21.7 lakh accounts opened in May and 25.2 lakh recorded in June 2025.

Depositories See Higher Account Additions

CDSL added 20.9 lakh new accounts during the month, its strongest monthly growth in four months. NSDL registered 4.8 lakh new account openings, the highest monthly addition in 11 months. With the latest increase, the total number of demat accounts in India crossed 23.16 crore, rising 1.1% sequentially and 16.3% compared with a year earlier.

The improvement follows two relatively softer months despite markets beginning their recovery in April. Around 22.3 lakh accounts were opened in April before additions slipped to 21.7 lakh in May. Activity accelerated again in June as retail participation strengthened.

Broader Market Rally Boosts Investor Interest

The recovery in equity markets appears to have encouraged more investors to enter the market. Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are up around 8% each since the beginning of April, with broader indices outperforming. During the same period, the BSE 150 MidCap Index has advanced 18%, the BSE 250 SmallCap Index has climbed 22%, and the BSE 250 Microcap Index has risen more than 31%.

The rally in mid-, small- and micro-cap stocks has supported renewed interest from retail investors seeking market exposure. The increase in demat account openings also comes as fundraising activity across the capital market has gathered pace.

Improving Market Conditions Support Sentiment

Besides the better equity performance, easing of geopolitical risks in the West Asia region, favorable crude oil prices and improved domestic macroeconomic scenario have all added to the confidence levels of the investors. The government and RBI’s initiatives to boost investments through favorable steps taken by them are also adding to the positive sentiments.

More activity seen in Qualified Institutional Placements, Offer for Sale deals and blocks along with revival in the IPOs have also led to increased participation in the capital market. Consistent improvements in the fundraising activities coupled with revival in the indexes have occurred in parallel with the demat account growth seen in June.

The retail participation having shown some strength after a brief pause suggests that June numbers are indicative of a resurgent equity participation by the investors.
