Thanks to the successful IPO of SpaceX, the company which made the historic $75 billion initial public offering, Elon Musk is now the world’s first trillionaire. According to the valuation by Forbes and Reuters, his net worth stands at more than $1.1 trillion, making him the richest man in the world.

His net worth mainly comes from SpaceX, in which Elon Musk owns a share worth about $866 billion. Prior to the public offering, Forbes had valued his overall fortune at around $780 billion. The share sale elevated SpaceX’s valuation to nearly $1.77 trillion, making it one of the most valuable companies in the U.S. stock market.

Matt Durot, Deputy Editor at Forbes Wealth, told Reuters that the gap between Musk and other billionaires has widened substantially. According to Forbes estimates cited by Reuters, no other individual has previously crossed the $500 billion mark, while most of the world’s richest people remain well below Musk’s current wealth level.

SpaceX Drives Wealth Expansion

Investor demand for the SpaceX offering underscored strong confidence in Musk-led businesses. The company, which operates across launch services, satellite communications and artificial intelligence-related ventures, has emerged as the largest contributor to Musk’s fortune.

Alongside SpaceX, Musk’s business interests include electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, brain-computer interface company Neuralink and infrastructure startup The Boring Company. Tesla played a major role in establishing Musk’s global profile after he took charge of the company in 2008 and accelerated the adoption of electric vehicles worldwide.

Market participants have gotten used to putting premium valuations on Musk-affiliated companies based on expectations of future growth, rather than traditional earnings-based metrics. As per Reuters, analysts have often described this phenomenon as an “Elon premium,” where investor confidence in Musk’s leadership contributes significantly to company valuations.

Business Influence Beyond Technology

This was extended to include social media company Twitter when it was acquired by Musk in 2022. This allowed Musk to communicate directly with a global community and added more weight to his influence during public policymaking.

Moreover, Musk’s involvement in politics has gained much traction. His participation in politics is seen through his advisory position in the Department of Government Efficiency when the United States President Donald Trump was in office. Even though his association drew some political backlash, it definitely added more significance to Musk beyond being a businessman.

Historic Achievement

This achievement highlights a new era of wealth accumulation on the global stage as technology-based companies have seen substantial gains in valuation over the last decade. Being at the helm of a public company like SpaceX that ranks among the most valuable companies in the world, Musk’s net worth will always be connected to the performance of his business empire.
