GIFT Nifty pointed to a muted opening for Indian benchmark indices on June 12, reflecting investor caution even as global equities advanced and crude oil prices retreated below the $90-per-barrel mark.
The derivative index was trading about 19 points, or 0.08%, lower in early trade, suggesting a negative opening for the Nifty 50 and Sensex. The indication comes after domestic markets ended Thursday’s session on a mixed note. The Nifty 50 closed 53 points lower at 23,161, while the BSE Sensex added 150 points to settle at 73,833.
GIFT Nifty Diverges From Global Optimism
While GIFT Nifty remained under pressure, sentiment across international markets improved significantly.
Asia-Pacific markets opened higher on Friday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street. South Korea’s Kospi rose 7.01% at the open, while the Kosdaq gained 3.25%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 advanced 3.4% and the broader Topix index climbed 1.8%. Hong Kong futures also indicated a stronger opening.
U.S. equity futures extended gains after comments from U.S. President Donald Trump raised expectations of a possible agreement between the U.S. and Iran. Futures linked to the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 rose about 0.2%, while Dow Jones futures gained nearly 59 points.
Wall Street Ends Higher
U.S. markets closed firmly in positive territory on Thursday, supported by a rebound in technology stocks and easing concerns surrounding developments in West Asia.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 929.97 points, or 1.86%. The S&P 500 increased 1.75% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.54% Investor focus is also on the listing of SpaceX which will raise $75 billion through its public offering. The transaction values the company at approximately $1.77 trillion.
Crude Oil Drops Below $90
Oil prices declined sharply as hopes of diplomatic progress between the U.S. and Iran reduced concerns over supply disruptions.
Brent crude futures slipped below the key $90-per-barrel level to trade around $89.20, while West Texas Intermediate crude fell to $86.49 per barrel. Lower crude oil prices are generally viewed as supportive for India, which imports a significant portion of its energy requirements.
FII Selling Continues
Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers on June 11, offloading equities worth ₹1,987.09 crore, according to provisional NSE data. Domestic institutional investors provided support by purchasing shares worth ₹4,224.51 crore.
Meanwhile, the rupee weakened 0.50% against the U.S. dollar to close at 95.76. The dollar index was trading marginally higher at 99.79.
With GIFT Nifty indicating a negative bias despite supportive global cues, investors are likely to monitor institutional flows, crude oil movements and developments in global markets for direction during Friday’s session.
