Nippon India MF, HDFC MF And Motilal Oswal MF: Top Three In New Folio Addition

According to data analysis from Cafemutual, Nippon India Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund and Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund are the largest asset management companies (AMCs) in terms of new folio additions during the calendar year 2024. The number of new investors added to the industry was huge, totaling more than 4.70 Crore new investor accounts by the top 10 fund houses. The mutual fund industry's total folio count increased by 38% from 16.48 Crore in December 2023 to 22.76 Crore in December 2024 according to Cafemutual's July 2024 Industry Report.
Top Performers in Folio Growth
Of all mutual funds, Nippon India Mutual Fund placed first in the new folio growth for the year, having the highest number of new folios this year with 8.8 million new investor accounts added. Consequently, the total pre-closure count of 30.9 million was achieved after growing 40% from the previous year.
HDFC Mutual Fund also added new folios during the year with the additional 7.1 million investor accounts. Therefore, the total pre-closure count of HDFC MF is 21.6 million with an increase of 49% from the previous year.
In addition, Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund's percentage increase for the year was the fastest among all the top contestants, accounting for an annual increase of 130%. The new folios added by Motilal Oswal MF in the absolute representation were 6.2 million folios, resulting in a December 2024 folio count of 11 million.
Contribution of Significant Competitors to Industry Development
In addition to this, several larger players established an important part of the industry's overall growth. Individuals who opened new SBI Mutual Funds contributed 61 lakhs in philosophies, bringing total Philosophy numbers at SBI Mutual Funds Now exceed 1.88 crore philosophies. For Fiscal Year 2024, there are 1.94 crore investment accounts.
While Kotak Mutual Fund added 33 Briefings and Groww Mutual Fund added 29 lakhs. On the lower end, Axis Mutual Fund listed 27 Briefings, and Mirae Asset compiled 23 lakhs. Finally, the Parag Parikh Fund added 21 lakh additional investment accounts.
Total Sector Growth
To summarise, MF Folio numbers for the 10 largest Fund Houses increased from 11.93 crore in December 2023 to 16.59 crore in December 2024, a 39% growth overall, through the rise in MF Folio Accounts within Retail Clients.
Folio growth complements the ongoing trend of New Financialisation of Savings in India, as investors have migrated away from traditional asset classes into equity markets. The amount of accounts being opened with Nippon India, HDFC, and Motilal Oswal indicates continued preference for and ownership of their investment products by the investing public during a booming equity market.
