There were only marginal changes in the prices of petrol & diesel city-wise on August 3, while the price structure remained unchanged throughout India. State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) continued to maintain retail fuel rates despite fresh volatility in the international crude price, which declined after signs of renewed diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Iran.
Domestic fuel prices have remained broadly stable since the last nationwide revision on May 25, insulating consumers from fluctuations in global oil markets.
Brent Crude Price Declines
The global crude price fell sharply during early Asian trading after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that fresh discussions with Iran would resume on Monday. The development improved expectations of a possible agreement that could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Brent crude dropped as much as 7.3% to $81.55 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate traded below $81 per barrel. The decline followed a sharp rally in July, when Brent futures had climbed after geopolitical tensions in West Asia disrupted energy markets.
Although international oil prices remain volatile, retail fuel prices in India continue to be determined by state-run OMCs, limiting the immediate impact of global crude price movements on domestic consumers.

Diplomatic Developments Weigh On Oil Markets
According to Bloomberg, President Trump said he had decided against launching a planned military strike on Iran after discussions with regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, who encouraged further negotiations.
Trump said, “We’re just going to see whether or not we can make a deal,” while also indicating that discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz would continue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that negotiations were moving forward, stating on Telegram that talks involving Oman had entered their final stages.
The diplomatic move helped alleviate any worries about possible disruption in global energy supplies, resulting in the decrease of international oil prices.
Fuel Demand Rises In July
Meanwhile, domestic fuel consumption remained strong during July. According to preliminary industry data reported by PTI, combined petrol sales by Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation increased 9.7% year-on-year to 3.45 million tonnes, compared with 3.14 million tonnes in the same month last year.
Diesel sales also rose 10.7% to 7.12 million tonnes from 6.43 million tonnes a year ago. The increase has been attributed to higher transportation activity and improved fuel demand from the agricultural sector during a period of below-normal monsoon rainfall.
Even as the international crude price remains sensitive to geopolitical developments, retail petrol and diesel prices in India continue to remain stable, with consumers seeing only marginal city-wise adjustments under the existing pricing mechanism.
