Petrol and diesel prices were unchanged across the country on June 17, with oil marketing companies maintaining rates after the last revision on May 25. The latest increase had lifted fuel prices by more than ₹2.50 per litre for both petrol and diesel, taking cumulative hikes since mid-May to around ₹7.5 per litre.

Retail fuel prices are currently at their highest levels since May 2022. For over two years, rates remained largely unchanged except for a ₹2 per litre reduction announced in March 2024.

Fuel Rates Hold Steady Across Major Cities

The latest city-wise fuel prices are as follows:

City Petrol (₹/litre) Diesel (₹/litre)
New Delhi 102.12 95.20
Kolkata 113.51 99.82
Mumbai 111.21 97.83
Chennai 107.87 99.65
Gurugram 102.62 95.30
Noida 101.96 95.44
Bengaluru 110.89 98.80

Lucknow 101.89 95.36
Patna 114.24 100.20
Thiruvananthapuram 115.49 104.40

Fuel prices vary from city to city because of differences in state taxes, value-added tax (VAT), transportation charges and local levies.

Four Rounds Of Increases Since May

Oil marketing companies have raised fuel prices four times since May. The most recent revision on May 25 increased petrol prices by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel prices by ₹2.71 per litre.

In Delhi, petrol moved up to ₹102.12 per litre from ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel increased to ₹95.20 per litre from ₹92.49 per litre following the latest revision.

Overall, petrol prices have risen about 7.8% since mid-May, while diesel rates are higher by approximately 8.6%.

West Asia Conflict Continues To Influence Energy Markets

The recent increase in fuel prices came amid supply concerns linked to the conflict involving the U.S. and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas supplies move, remains a closely watched region for energy markets.

India relies significantly on imports from Gulf nations for crude oil, liquefied natural gas and LPG supplies. A disturbance in the area could influence the procurement cost and supply chain.

As per the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, there is sufficient fuel available in the country. It was also suggested by him that further supply from countries like Canada and the United States could meet the deficit of imports.

For now, consumers continue to pay the same rates as fuel retailers await further clarity on global crude oil price movements and developments in international energy markets.
