Domestic and Commercial LPG Cylinders

The prices of domestic cylinders containing 14.2 kg of fuel have remained the same since the rate increase in March 2026, when prices went up by ₹60.

The price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder was revised twice in March and April 2026, when prices went up by ₹144 in March, and another increase occurred on April 1.

Supply Disruptions And Import Dependence

The recent price increases were linked to supply constraints after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route. Government data indicates that about 20% of global oil and gas trade passes through this route.

India imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirements, with around 90% of these imports routed through the Strait of Hormuz, according to government statements. Shipment operations in the area have been subdued in the face of existing tensions, causing supply disruptions.

Impact of Global Energy Prices

The prices of international crude oil have gone up significantly since the beginning of the crisis, with an average increase of up to 50%. This has led to increased production costs of LPG among other forms of petroleum.

State-run oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, revise LPG prices periodically based on global benchmarks.

Shipping Activity Remains Subdued

Ship movements through the Strait of Hormuz have remained below normal levels. Ship-tracking data cited by Bloomberg shows that 11 vessels passed through the route on Tuesday, compared with an average of 16 over the weekend. 

Even with lower levels of movement, there is still some transportation that takes place. This ensures the flow of goods across the world.

Supply of LPG in India

According to the government, LPG supplies in India are adequate. They have also urged people not to hoard gas cylinders.

In the absence of new changes, the prices of LPG in India are steady as of April 17, despite any developments in the international energy markets.
