The rupee weakened in early trade on April 28, opening at ₹94.37 per U.S. dollar compared to the previous close of ₹94.19, according to market data. This follows an overnight surge of nearly 2% in the price of Brent crude.

There had been an overnight surge in the price of Brent crude, which was hovering at about $110 per barrel against the backdrop of disturbances in the Strait of Hormuz. This was a result of ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, Reuters reported.

Crude Oil Movement Pressures Currency

The firmness in crude oil prices has added pressure on the rupee, as India imports a significant share of its oil requirements. Brent crude rose nearly 2% overnight, reflecting concerns over supply disruptions linked to the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

The International Energy Agency has said before that the route is very important for supply flows because it carries a large amount of oil shipments around the world.

Central Bank And Market Activity

The Reserve Bank of India is active in the foreign exchange market to manage volatility, according to market participants. The central bank has taken measures from time to time to stabilize the volatile nature of rupee without any official communication on April 28.

Hedging activities are being done by the importers to hedge against further depreciation of the currency.

Geopolitical Events

Measures to de-escalate the conflict between the United States and Iran are still doubtful. According to Reuters, the Iranians have suggested delaying discussions related to their nuclear program until the situation becomes stable.

The White House has made it clear that it will not make any statement regarding negotiations via the media and has reaffirmed its stance on certain important preconditions regarding the dispute.

Since the price of crude oil is still at a high level, and the supply lines are also getting impacted, the value of the rupee is still reflecting international happenings in the commodities and foreign exchange markets.
