Public sector undertaking stocks increased their share of India's equity market capitalisation to a 17-month high in January, driven by a rally in select names across banking, defence, metals, and commodities. Data showed the PSU sector's market share rose to nearly 15%, supported by sharp gains in a few large stocks, even as overall participation remained uneven.

Public sector undertaking stocks accounted for 14.97% of the total market capitalisation of companies listed on the BSE in January. This marks the highest level in 17 months, according to data compiled by Moneycontrol.
The PSU sector's market share increased from 13.93% in December, reflecting gains in select state-owned companies.

Market capitalisation trends

The combined market capitalisation of 96 listed PSU companies stood at ₹68.61 lakh crore in January. This compares with ₹52.63 lakh crore recorded in February last year, the data showed.
Despite the recent rise, the PSU sector's share remains below its peak of 16.76% reached in July 2024.

Stocks driving the rally

The increase in market share was led by strong performance in a limited number of PSU stocks. Gains were concentrated in banking, defence, metals, and commodity-linked segments.

Hindustan Copper emerged as one of the top performers, gaining more than 210 per cent over the past year. The stock contributed significantly to the sector's overall market capitalisation.

Selective participation

The data indicated that the rally in PSU stocks has been selective rather than broad-based. Gains were concentrated in a few large and mid-sized companies.
While several PSU stocks recorded sharp price increases, others remained range-bound. This resulted in uneven participation across the sector.

Recent market context

The rise in PSU market share comes amid heightened volatility in broader equity markets. Investors have selectively rotated into stocks that have delivered strong earnings or benefited from sector-specific developments.

Market participants continue to track PSU performance as part of overall sectoral trends, particularly in capital-intensive and government-linked industries.
