Pharmaceutical stocks outperformed the broader market on Monday, 8 June, even as benchmark indices saw a sharp selloff amid global weakness, higher crude oil prices, and escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

The Nifty Pharma index gained for the fourth straight session on the back of some heavyweight firms such Sun Pharma, Alkem Laboratories, JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals and others. The sectoral index advanced despite pressure across broader equities.

Nifty Pharma Extends Winning Streak

The Nifty Pharma index rose 1.4% on 8 June, continuing its upward trend for a fourth straight trading session with gains of 1.25% in the extended sequence. The sustained momentum in the index came even as broader market sentiment remained weak, reflecting mixed performance across sectoral constituents. The buying interest was limited to certain large-cap and mid-cap pharma stocks which helped the index to remain in green during the session.

Stock-Wise Movement In Pharma Pack

Pharma stocks traded in a mixed pattern, with several key gainers offsetting losses in select counters. Among top performers, JB Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals surged nearly 1.8%. Alkem Laboratories and Mankind Pharma each advanced around 1.7%, contributing significantly to sectoral strength.

Other notable gainers included Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Ajanta Pharma, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, and Gland Pharma, which rose by up to 1.3% during the session. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries also remained among the supportive large-cap names contributing to overall resilience in the index.

On the losing side, Wockhardt declined over 2.3%, emerging as the biggest laggard in the pharma space. Lupin, Cipla, Piramal Pharma, and Laurus Labs also ended lower, slipping in the range of 0.3% to 0.8%. Divi’s Laboratories and Abbott India recorded marginal declines during the trading session.

Broader Market Witnesses Sharp Selloff

Benchmark indices ended the session under pressure. The Sensex fell 724.95 points to close at 73,518.39, while the Nifty 50 declined 222.45 points to settle at 23,138.60. Investor sentiment across sectors leading the selloff was pulled down by negative global cues, rising crude oil prices and heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

The pharma stocks held up quite well relative to the other sectors and selective purchasing was witnessed throughout the trading session despite the fall.

Pharma Sector Shows Relative Strength

The pharmaceutical sector continued to attract investor interest even during volatile market conditions. The industry is frequently considered somewhat stable because the demand for healthcare products and services is usually constant, regardless of economic climate. That demand pattern served to contain downside pressure in certain pharma counters even as broader equity markets declined sharply.

Buying inside the index was mostly concentrated in a few heavyweight stocks, offsetting weakness elsewhere. The mixed performance was more a product of stock-specific movement than sectoral trend.

Sectoral Outlook Supported By Selective Buying

The pharma sector in all ended in positive territory for the fourth straight session with the Nifty Pharma index continuing gains despite a significant decline in benchmark indexes. Pharmaceutical companies were at the forefront of the rally with large-cap and mid-cap issues leading the way. Equities were nevertheless under broader market pressure.
