India Auto Retail Sales Hit Record 2.41 Million Units In February, Says FADA

The Indian automobile retail market reported the best February sales ever in the year 2026, with the total vehicle sales reaching 2.41 million units, representing a growth of 26% over the prior year, based on the data provided by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on March 5.

The latest figure surpassed the previous February record of 2.04 million units reported in 2024, based on FADA data. Despite February being a shorter month, five of the six vehicle segments tracked by the association recorded their highest-ever retail volumes for the month.

Growth Across Major Vehicle Segments

Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and tractors all posted record February sales. Two-wheeler retail sales rose 25% year-on-year, while three-wheeler sales increased 24%. Passenger vehicle sales grew 26% and commercial vehicle sales climbed 29% during the same period.

Construction equipment was the only category that did not set a new February record, as retail sales in the segment declined by 1.22% year-on-year, according to FADA.

FADA President C S Vigneshwar said the sector’s performance reflects continued demand across both personal mobility and commercial transport segments following policy changes related to GST.

Passenger Vehicle Sales And Market Trends

Passenger vehicle retail sales stood at 394,768 units in February. Growth remained broad-based across markets, with urban sales rising 21% year-on-year and rural markets registering stronger growth of 34%, according to FADA data.

Among manufacturers, Maruti Suzuki reported retail sales of 154,095 units in February, representing a 28% increase compared with the same month last year. Tata Motors recorded sales of 56,447 units, up 43% year-on-year. Mahindra & Mahindra reported sales of 53,281 units, reflecting a 25% increase, while Hyundai Motor recorded sales of 45,615 units, a rise of 16% compared with February last year.

FADA also reported that passenger vehicle inventory levels declined by around five days during the month and currently stand between 27 and 29 days.

Two-Wheeler And Commercial Vehicle Sales

Two-wheeler retail sales reached 1.7 million units in February, maintaining strong growth across both urban and rural markets. Urban sales increased 29% year-on-year while rural markets recorded 22% growth, according to FADA data.

Hero MotoCorp reported sales of 457,836 units during the month, representing an 18% increase compared with the previous year. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India recorded sales of 431,253 units, while TVS Motor reported sales of 333,935 units. Both companies registered year-on-year growth of 31%.

Commercial vehicle retail sales stood at 100,820 units in February, supported by freight demand, infrastructure activity and steady e-commerce movement, according to FADA.

The association said overall retail data for February reflects continued demand across vehicle categories and improved inventory management across dealerships in the domestic automobile market.
