The automobile retail market in India achieved its best-ever April performance in 2026, with a total increase of 12.94% in vehicle registrations year-on-year to 2,611,317 units, as per FADA data.
Five vehicle categories, two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors, recorded their highest-ever April retail volumes. Only the construction equipment segment reported a decline during the month.
Two-Wheelers Lead Overall Growth
The two-wheeler segment remained the largest contributor to overall sales growth. In April 2026, retail registrations in this category rose 13.01% from the previous year to 19,16,258 units. During the same time period, sales of passenger vehicles rose 12.21% to 4,07,355 units, and sales of commercial vehicles rose 15.02% to 99,339 units.
Sales of three-wheelers were 1,06,908 units, which is a 7.19% increase from April of last year. Tractor sales grew the most of any category, going up 23.22% from the previous year to 75,109 units. The construction equipment segment was the only one that saw a drop in sales, which fell 2.25% year-on-year to 6,348 units.
Auto Stocks Show Mixed Reaction Amid Record Retail Data
Following the release of the record-breaking retail numbers, the Indian stock market showed a varied response today, May 5, 2026. The Nifty Auto Index went up a little, gaining 0.25% to reach 26,093.55 by the middle of the afternoon. Some of the most important things about each stock were:
Shares of Maruti Suzuki rose almost 5% to about ₹13,580 as investors were happy with how well the company did in the passenger vehicle market.
Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M): The stock rose 1.2% to ₹3,105.75 after the company reported a strong 48% rise in its consolidated net profit for the fourth quarter, along with retail data.
Bajaj Auto: Up more than 4.7%, the best in the two-wheeler sector.
Tata Motors: There was some profit booking, and the stock fell about 1.6% to ₹409.90.
Rural Demand Continues To Outpace Urban Markets
FADA data showed stronger growth in rural markets across multiple vehicle categories. In the passenger vehicle segment, rural retail sales grew 20.40% year-on-year, compared to 7.11% growth in urban markets.
Commercial vehicle demand also remained stronger in rural regions, where sales increased 20.25% year-on-year against 10.22% growth in urban areas.
The industry body said the April performance was supported by improved affordability under GST 2.0, favourable financing conditions, healthy rural cash flows after the rabi harvest season and demand linked to the ongoing marriage season.
Passenger Vehicles And EV Adoption
Within passenger vehicles, demand remained supported by entry-level cars, SUVs and alternative fuel vehicles.
CNG-powered vehicles accounted for 22.62% of total passenger vehicle sales in April, while electric vehicle penetration in the segment improved to 5.77%, according to FADA data.
Inventory levels in the passenger vehicle category remained at around 28-30 days during the month. In the two-wheeler category, electric vehicle penetration stood at 7.76%.
Commercial Vehicle Segment Posts Double-Digit Growth
Commercial vehicle sales recorded growth across segments in April. Medium commercial vehicle sales increased 27.07% year-on-year, while light commercial vehicle sales rose 17.76%. Heavy commercial vehicle sales were up 8.25% during the month.
FADA said infrastructure activity and freight movement supported demand in the commercial vehicle category.
Month-on-month, the total number of vehicles registered dropped by 3.01% against March 2026.
The outlook of the dealers was optimistic about future sales because most of the dealers interviewed by FADA anticipated rising sales in May owing to demand generated by the marriage season, replacement purchases, and new financial year schemes.
