The derivative index traded near 24,114, about 62 points above the previous close of Nifty futures, indicating a positive opening for the benchmark indices. On Wednesday, the Sensex climbed 790.54 points, or 1.04%, to finish at 76,991.22, while the Nifty 50 advanced 197.55 points, or 0.83%, to close at 24,021.65.
Gift Nifty Indicates Firm Opening
Gift Nifty remained the key indicator for domestic markets ahead of the opening bell. The premium over Nifty futures suggested that traders were positioning for a stronger start amid improving global sentiment and softer energy prices.
Asian Markets Advance
Asian equities traded mostly higher after upbeat earnings from U.S. memory-chip maker Micron Technology lifted sentiment in technology stocks.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.28%, while the broader Topix index gained 0.76%. South Korea’s Kospi jumped more than 5% and the Kosdaq advanced 1.32%. Hong Kong futures, however, pointed to a subdued opening.
Wall Street Ends Mixed
U.S. markets closed mixed overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 182.06 points, or 0.35%, to 51,848.90.
The S&P 500 slipped 0.10% to 7,358.22, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.43% to 25,476.64 amid weakness in several large-cap technology stocks.
Micron Delivers Strong Quarterly Numbers
Micron Technology reported quarterly earnings and revenue ahead of analyst estimates and also issued a stronger-than-expected outlook for the current quarter.
The company posted third-quarter revenue of $41.46 billion and adjusted earnings of $25.11 per share. It projected adjusted earnings of around $31 per share for the fourth quarter. Following the announcement, Micron shares gained nearly 15% in after-hours trading.
Crude Oil Continues To Ease
Crude oil prices extended losses as shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz moved closer to normal levels following recent diplomatic developments involving the U.S. and Iran.
Brent crude futures fell 0.54% to $73.34 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude declined 0.38% to $70.07 per barrel.
Bitcoin Drops Below $60,000
Bitcoin slipped below the $60,000 mark and touched $59,023. Bloomberg, citing CoinGlass data, reported that nearly $800 million worth of long crypto positions were liquidated over the previous 24 hours ahead of the expiry of Bitcoin options contracts this week.
Gold Remains Weak
Gold prices stayed under pressure as the U.S. dollar strengthened and expectations around Federal Reserve policy remained in focus. Spot gold traded at $3,985.89 per ounce, while silver fell to $57.33 per ounce.
Dollar Holds Firm, Bond Yields Ease
The dollar index hovered near 101.6 after touching a 13-month high. The euro traded around $1.1353, while the British pound remained near a seven-month low.
On the other hand, yields on U.S. treasuries dropped, with the 10-year yield sliding to 4.398% while the two-year yield dipping to 4.137%.
Key Global Cues
Apart from Gift Nifty, the progress in the U.S.-Iran talks and movements in crude oil as well as technology stocks in foreign markets would be keenly watched. Given that there has been a sharp rally in the Indian market, the impact of external cues is expected to be quite significant.
