New investor additions on the National Stock Exchange have decreased by 30% year on year to 1.5 crores in FY26 so far, compared with 2.12 crores in FY25, marking the sharpest fall in the last three years, as per NSE Pulse figures.

Total Investor Base Continues To Expand

Despite the slowdown in fresh registrations, the overall investor base continued to grow. The total number of unique investors reached 12.78 crore in FY26 so far, up 13.3% from 11.28 crore recorded in FY25, as per NSE data.

Market Performance During FY26

Indian equity markets remained volatile during the period. Benchmark indices declined, with the Sensex falling 4.5% and the Nifty dropping 2.6%. Broader market trends were mixed, with the BSE MidCap 150 index rising 1.5% while the BSE SmallCap 250 index declined 4.6%.

Market volatility was influenced by geopolitical tensions, currency movements, and sustained foreign institutional investor outflows, according to market data.

Impact Of Global And Domestic Factors

This phase also saw an increase in the prevailing tensions in West Asia from late February, during which the benchmark indices lost over 10%. This selling by foreign investors continued to impact the market sentiments during this phase.

Regional Distribution Of New Investors

On a regional basis, North India contributed 39.8% to the total new investors registered so far in FY26, followed by South India at 25%, West India at 21.5%, and East India at 13.4%, according to the NSE Pulse.

North India’s share has increased by 6.9 percentage points compared to FY21 levels, while West India’s contribution declined from 34% in FY21 to 23.7% in FY26 so far.

State-Wise Contribution And Monthly Trends

At the state level, Uttar Pradesh topped with 14.8% of total registrations, followed by Maharashtra with 10.6%, Tamil Nadu with 7%, West Bengal with 6.9%, and Bihar with 6.4%. These top five states cumulatively added 45.7% to incremental additions, with around 66 lakh new investors added so far in FY26.

On a monthly basis, all states reported a decline in registration momentum. However, Uttar Pradesh maintained its position as the largest contributor, though registrations were 22% lower month-on-month, while Gujarat registered the sharpest fall of 50.4%.

According to the latest NSE figures, investor participation continues to increase in absolute terms, though the rate at which this increase is happening has slowed down significantly due to market volatility and changing investment conditions.
