Nifty Metal Companies List

Nifty Metal is a sectoral index that tracks the performance of stocks from the metals and mining sector listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It includes up to 15 eligible stocks selected under the index methodology.

The index uses the free-float market capitalisation method to determine the weight of each stock. This means stocks with a higher free-float market value generally have a higher weight in the index.

Nifty Metal has a base date of January 1, 2004, and a base value of 1,000. Its value is calculated in real time during market hours.

Unlike broad market indices such as Nifty 50, which cover companies from different sectors, Nifty Metal focuses on one sector. This allows the index to track movements in the metals and mining segment of the Indian equity market.

The Nifty Metal Index is calculated using the free-float market capitalisation method. The basic formula is:

Index Value = Current Free-Float Market Capitalisation ÷ Index Base Market Capitalisation × Base Index Value

Free-float market capitalisation considers the shares that are available for public trading. The index level changes when the prices or eligible market values of its constituent stocks change.

The index is calculated in real time during market hours.

The following are some key criteria used for selecting stocks for the Nifty metal today:

  • Stocks should be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, subject to the applicable methodology.
  • Stocks should belong to the metals sector.
  • The stock should have a trading frequency of at least 90% over the previous six months.
  • The stock should have a minimum listing history of one month on the relevant cut-off date.
  • No single stock can have more than 33% weight at the time of rebalancing.
  • The combined weight of the top three stocks cannot exceed 62% at rebalancing.

The Nifty Metal works through three main stages:

1. Selection: Eligible metals-sector stocks are selected based on the index methodology.

2. Calculation: The index value is calculated using the free-float market capitalisation of its constituents.

3. Rebalancing: The index is reviewed, and its constituents or weights may change based on the applicable criteria.

The index is rebalanced twice a year. The review cut-off dates are January 31 and July 31.

The following are some features of the Nifty Metal:

  • Sector Exposure: The index provides exposure to the metals and mining segment through a group of stocks.
  • Multiple Stocks: It tracks up to 15 eligible stocks instead of relying on one stock.
  • Benchmark: It can be used to compare the performance of metals-sector portfolios.
  • Index Products: The index can serve as the underlying index for ETFs and index funds.
  • Real-Time Tracking: Its value is calculated during market hours, allowing investors to track sector movements.
  • Weight Limits: The methodology places limits on individual and top-three stock weights at the time of rebalancing.

The Nifty Metal Index has a base date of January 1, 2004, and a base value of 1,000. It was launched on July 12, 2011. The index was created to track the performance of the metals sector, including mining.

Since its launch, the index has been reviewed periodically as per its methodology. The number and weights of constituents can change during these reviews.

During the review, eligible stocks are assessed based on the index selection criteria. The constituent weights are then adjusted using the free-float market capitalisation method, subject to the prescribed stock-level limits.

The Nifty Metal itself is an index. Investors can get exposure through products or securities linked to it.

  • Constituent Stocks: Investors with a Demat account can buy individual stocks that form part of the index. This provides exposure to selected stocks rather than the index as a whole.
  • Exchange-Traded Funds: ETFs linked to the Nifty Metal can be bought and sold through a trading and Demat account. The available products and their tracking details can differ.
  • Index Funds: Index mutual funds may track the Nifty Metal and aim to follow its performance, subject to tracking differences and fund-related factors.

The applicable costs, product structure and tracking difference should be checked before making an investment decision.

The following are some risks linked to the Nifty Metal:

  • Sector Cycles: Metals companies can be affected by changes in demand and economic activity.
  • Commodity Prices: Changes in metal and raw material prices can affect companies in the sector.
  • Global Demand: International demand, trade policies and global economic conditions can affect metals businesses.
  • Price Volatility: The prices of metals-sector stocks can fluctuate based on market and sector developments.

The Nifty Metal is market-linked, and its value can rise or fall with changes in its constituent stocks. Past performance does not indicate future results.

The Nifty Metal is managed under the governance framework of NSE Indices. A professional team manages the index, with oversight through a three-tier structure comprising the Board of Directors, Index Advisory Committee and Index Maintenance Sub-Committee.

These bodies oversee the index methodology, reviews and maintenance. The index is reviewed and rebalanced as per the prescribed rules, with changes made based on the eligibility and weight criteria.

The NIFTY Metal Total Returns Index measures index performance by including both stock price changes and dividends from its constituents. The dividends are treated as reinvested in the index. This differs from the regular price index, which reflects only changes in stock prices. The Total Returns Index can therefore be used as a reference when comparing the performance of ETFs or index funds with the underlying index.
