Understanding the 5paisa Mutual Fund Score

The 5paisa Mutual Fund Score helps investors compare and rank mutual funds within the same category. Instead of relying on a single metric, such as past returns, the score combines multiple parameters to provide a more comprehensive view of a fund's performance and characteristics, with the overall score presented on a scale of 0 to 100.

Each fund receives a normalised score based on its position relative to other funds in the same category. For example, a score of 90 indicates that the fund ranks near the top of its category.

In some cases, the highest score in a category may be below 100. This is a result of the score distribution within that category and applies to the category as a whole, not to any individual fund. It does not affect the relative ranking of funds. Scores should be interpreted in the context of the fund's category and its peers.

The score is based on four factors:

  • Performance
  • Portfolio
  • Operations
  • Risk vs Reward

Each of these has several checks. Every fund is evaluated against its peers, so a large-cap fund is compared only with other large-cap funds, a liquid fund with other liquid funds, and so on.

Performance

Performance looks at whether a fund has consistently delivered returns over different time periods. It also considers how the fund behaves in different market conditions: in both rising and falling markets.

Portfolio

This checks the quality of the fund's holdings, how concentrated the portfolio is, the valuation of its underlying investments compared with its peers, and portfolio liquidity.

Operations

Operations checks how efficiently the fund is managed. It looks at expense ratio, portfolio turnover, fund size, operating history and long-term ratings.

Risk vs Reward

Higher returns are meaningful only when viewed in terms of the risks taken to achieve them. This looks at risk-adjusted returns, volatility and the fund's benchmark performance to see whether the fund has delivered adequate returns for the level of risk it took.

How to use the score

The overall score provides a quick way to compare funds, but the individual factor scores also provide great insights.

Two funds may have similar overall scores for different reasons. One may score well for example, because of strong performance, while another may stand out for portfolio quality and lower risk. Looking at the factor-wise scores helps find these differences.

The score is most useful when comparing funds within the same category. A lower score in one area should be treated as a reason to look more closely, rather than an automatic reason to avoid the fund.

What the score doesn't tell you

The MF Score evaluates the fund itself. It does not take into account your own financial goals, investment horizon, risk tolerance or existing portfolio.

The score is also based on historical data and the fund's current portfolio. It cannot predict future performance or account for changes in market conditions, fund management or investment strategy before they happen. It is not a crystal ball.
