About the S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500 Index or the Standard & Poor’s 500 is a popular U.S. stock market index which includes 500 large-capitalisation companies traded on exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. The index comprises 80% of the total U.S. equity market, thus being an essential index for American markets.

Created in 1957 by Standard & Poor’s (currently S&P Dow Jones Indices), the index utilises a free-float market-capitalisation-weighted approach. In other words, large companies such as Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia influence the index much more than small companies.

Unlike the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which tracks 30 companies using a price-weighted approach, the S&P 500 index provides wider coverage of the market. It is used by global fund managers and ETFs to track the performance of the U.S. market.

For Indian investors, the S&P 500 index is important to track global trends, sector-specific information such as about AI and semiconductors, and market sentiment in general.

How Does the S&P 500 Work?

The S&P 500 is a market capitalisation-weighted index, meaning companies with larger market value have a greater impact on its movement. It uses free-float market capitalisation, which only considers shares available for public trading.

Large companies like Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia influence the index more than smaller firms due to their higher market value.

The index is managed by the S&P Dow Jones Indices Committee, which selects companies based on criteria such as U.S. listing, market capitalisation, liquidity and positive earnings. It is reviewed and rebalanced regularly to reflect market changes.

This structure keeps the S&P 500 accurate and widely used as a benchmark for measuring the performance of large U.S. companies.

The S&P 500 includes 500 leading U.S. companies across different industries. A small group of large-cap companies accounts for a significant share of the index, making their performance an important driver of its overall movement. Why Is the S&P 500 Important for Indian Investors?

The S&P 500 Index is one of the leading stock market indexes reflecting the performance of 500 largest U.S. companies and benchmarking the U.S. stock market. The changes in this index significantly influence the world financial markets and thus the investors from India. For this reason, it is crucial for the Indian investors to follow the S&P 500 as this index helps them to get insight into the world economy, investment climate, and industry performance, including technologies, healthcare, and consumer services industries.

Since many firms from the index operate internationally, they influence the inflows of foreign institutional investments (FII). Positive performance of the U.S. stock markets increases investor confidence, while volatility decreases investments in the emerging markets, including India. In addition, the investors can achieve diversification by investing in the firms from the S&P 500 as they allow getting access to some sectors absent in the Indian stock market indexes.
