Rupee Opens Slightly Firmer At ₹95.51 As Asian Currencies Gain
Last Updated: 28th August 2026 - 10:36 am
Summary:
The rupee edged up slightly at the opening on Friday, while most Asian currencies also gained against the U.S. dollar. The domestic currency remained close to the ₹95.50 level as importer demand and Reserve Bank of India intervention kept the market range-bound.
The Indian rupee began Friday’s session at ₹95.51 against the U.S. dollar, compared with ₹95.54 at Thursday’s close. Trading remained subdued as participants monitored dollar demand from importers and awaited signals on the U.S. interest-rate outlook.
Rupee Holds Near ₹95.50
Finrex expects the rupee to remain within a narrow ₹95.40-₹95.60 range during the session. The brokerage said the Reserve Bank of India is expected to remain active around the upper end of the range, while demand from oil companies, importers and month-end transactions could provide support near the lower levels.
Exporters are expected to remain active when the rupee strengthens towards ₹95.60, with selling interest potentially extending to ₹95.75. Importers, meanwhile, are expected to use dips to meet their dollar requirements.
The rupee’s current level continues to keep the rupee share price keyword irrelevant here; for currency coverage, the focus remains on the rupee-dollar exchange rate rather than an equity asset.
Asian Currencies Mostly In Positive Territory
Most major Asian currencies traded higher against the U.S. dollar during Friday’s session. The South Korean won led the gains, rising 0.249%, while the Taiwan dollar advanced 0.19%. The Malaysian ringgit added 0.124%.
The Singapore dollar and Chinese renminbi gained 0.055% and 0.036%, respectively. The Japanese yen was almost unchanged, moving up 0.019%.
The Philippine peso moved in the opposite direction, declining 0.507%. The Indonesian rupiah fell 0.107%, while the Thai baht weakened 0.03%.
The broader regional moves came as the U.S. dollar remained close to a one-week high against major currencies.
Fed Speech In Focus
Investors are also awaiting Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s address at the Jackson Hole symposium. The speech is being watched for indications about the direction of U.S. monetary policy and the interest-rate outlook.
Changes in U.S. interest rate expectations can also influence emerging-market currencies through dollar demand and cross-border capital flows. For the rupee, these global factors are being watched alongside domestic dollar requirements and the RBI’s market operations.
With the currency opening only three paise above the previous close, the immediate focus remains on whether the rupee can hold around ₹95.50 while exporters and importers adjust their dollar transactions through the session.
