Last Updated: 2nd September 2026 - 03:22 pm
Shares of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) rose more than 1% on 2 September after the company reported its highest-ever monthly cargo volumes, helping the stock outperform a weak broader market. The company handled 50 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in August, up 19% from a year earlier.
The stock was trading around ₹1,666 in afternoon trade, up 1.1%, and was among the top gainers on the Nifty 50 index, according to Moneycontrol.
Record cargo handling in August
Adani Ports said the 50 MMT handled during August was the highest monthly cargo volume in the company's history. The growth was driven by strong performance across its domestic and international port network.
Dry cargo volumes increased 25% year-on-year during the month, while container volumes rose 15%, according to the company.
Year-to-date volumes rise 16%
For the period from April to August, Adani Ports handled 234.4 MMT of cargo, a 16% increase compared with the corresponding period last year.
During the same period, dry cargo volumes grew 17% while container volumes increased 15%, the company said.
Container business supports growth
The company attributed growth in its container business to the expansion of its transshipment operations led by Vizhinjam and Colombo ports. According to Adani Ports, the expansion has helped increase its share of regional trade flows.
The company also cited growth in liquid cargo handling and stronger traction in dry cargo, including coastal cargo movements.
Long-term expansion target
Adani Ports said the latest performance keeps it on track towards its target of handling 1 billion metric tonnes of cargo annually by FY31.
In the logistics segment, rail volumes reached 54,131 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August, up 6% sequentially. Year-to-date rail volumes stood at 2.5 lakh TEUs, down 33% year-on-year.
Broader market under pressure
The stock's gains came despite a broader market decline. At around 12:20 pm, the Nifty 50 was down 235 points, or 0.98%, at 23,820.70, while the Sensex had fallen 653 points, or 0.85%, to 76,291.46, according to market data cited by Moneycontrol.
Adani Ports shares have gained 12.4% so far in 2026, compared with an 8.8% decline in the Nifty 50 over the same period. The company had a market capitalisation of about ₹3.84 lakh crore at the prevailing market price, according to Moneycontrol.
