Crude Oil Prices Ease After Five-Day Rise
Global crude oil prices moved lower on Friday following a five-session rally. Brent crude declined 0.7% to around $93.10 a barrel and remained on course for a weekly gain of more than 5%, Bloomberg reported.
West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery also slipped, trading near $86 a barrel after recording gains over the previous five sessions.
The movement in crude remains relevant for India because the country depends heavily on imported oil. However, domestic retail fuel rates have not mirrored every short-term change in the global crude market.
For consumers tracking the crude price, the recent five-day rise had pushed international benchmarks higher before Friday’s pullback. The latest decline therefore comes after a sustained period of gains rather than a broader reversal in oil prices.
Middle East Tensions Keep Oil Market In Focus
The decline in crude came as tensions involving the U.S. and Iran remained in focus. U.S. President Donald Trump warned of severe economic consequences for countries providing financial support to Iran and threatened broader economic measures against Tehran.
Iran rejected the U.S. position. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the proposed economic measures as a threat to the wider global economy, while Iran’s central bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati said oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz had virtually stopped.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also backed the administration’s position and warned that countries and companies dealing with Iran could face secondary sanctions. China, identified as the largest importer of Iranian oil, called for a diplomatic solution.
For Indian motorists, petrol and diesel prices on August 21 remain unchanged across most major markets despite the latest movement in the crude price. Any sustained change in international oil prices, however, remains an important factor for the domestic fuel market.
