Summary:

Government bonds remained largely stable on August 14, while the rupee strengthened slightly against the U.S. dollar as softer crude oil prices provided some relief ahead of the Centre’s scheduled debt auction.

The benchmark 10-year government bond yield was little changed at 6.7536% on Friday, compared with 6.7582% in the previous session. The rupee, meanwhile, opened 6 paise higher at ₹95.38 against the U.S. dollar, up from Thursday’s close of ₹95.44.

Bond Market Awaits Debt Auction

Market attention is expected to remain on the government’s weekly debt auction later on Friday. The Centre plans to raise ₹32,000 crore through the sale of two new government securities, among other securities.

The auction comes against the backdrop of relatively stable government bond yields and continued focus on inflation and crude oil prices. India’s July retail inflation stood at 4.45%, slightly above 4.38% recorded in June.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield share price is not applicable as bonds do not have a conventional stock price; however, the 6.7536% yield remains the key market reference for the benchmark security.

Crude Oil Prices Offer Rupee Some Relief

Brent crude price declined about 2% overnight and was trading near $87 a barrel. The fall came even as geopolitical concerns remained elevated following the U.S. threat of maintaining a naval blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely.

Uncertainty around ceasefire discussions has kept the possibility of supply disruptions in focus. Activity through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for global energy shipments, also remains restricted.

India imports nearly 85% of its energy requirements, making crude oil price movements an important factor for the rupee and the country’s external balance.

Rupee Remains Under Pressure

The rupee has declined about 0.2% so far this week despite Friday’s early gain. The currency has also remained around the ₹95.45 level as the Reserve Bank of India has intervened in the foreign exchange market to limit sharp movements.

A currency trader at a private-sector bank told Reuters that lower oil prices and a broadly supportive risk environment could provide some support to the rupee, although the scope for a sustained rise remained limited.

The trader also said continued RBI intervention had supported the currency, reducing the potential for a stronger move even with crude oil prices easing.

Weekly Auction In Focus

The combination of crude oil prices, currency movements, inflation and the government’s borrowing programme will remain important for the bond market. Friday’s ₹32,000 crore debt auction will provide the next major indication of demand for government securities as the benchmark 10-year bond yield remains close to 6.75%.
