Coal India rises 4% after Mahanadi Coalfields IPO filing, strong coal demand boosts sentiment

Coal India shares rose nearly 4% on 2 September, making the state-run miner the top gainer on the Nifty 50 index, as investors reacted positively to the proposed initial public offering (IPO) of its subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) and improving demand conditions in the coal market.
The stock gained after Coal India filed draft papers for the listing of Mahanadi Coalfields, one of its key coal-producing subsidiaries.
Mahanadi Coalfields IPO to be an offer for sale
According to draft documents filed by the company, Coal India plans to sell up to 66.18 crore shares in Mahanadi Coalfields, representing a 10% stake in the subsidiary.
The proposed issue is entirely an offer for sale (OFS). Mahanadi Coalfields will not issue any new shares and will not receive any proceeds from the IPO, according to the filing cited by Moneycontrol.
Demand outlook supports stock
Apart from the IPO development, brokerages highlighted favourable industry conditions for Coal India. Strong thermal coal demand, declining coal inventories and the possibility of higher e-auction premiums were cited as factors supporting the stock.
These factors are expected to support earnings for the miner as electricity demand remains firm and coal consumption by power producers stays elevated.
Focus on value unlocking
The proposed listing is part of Coal India's broader effort to unlock value from its subsidiaries through separate market listings. Mahanadi Coalfields is a wholly owned subsidiary of the company and is among India's largest coal-producing entities.
The IPO filing comes at a time when investor interest in public sector companies and subsidiary listings remains strong, helping improve sentiment towards Coal India shares.
Market reaction
Investor optimism around the planned stake sale and favourable sector fundamentals helped lift Coal India shares during Wednesday's trading session, placing the stock at the top of the Nifty gainers' list.
The stock's advance reflects expectations that the Mahanadi Coalfields listing could help unlock value for shareholders while strong coal demand continues to support the company's core business.
