Key Takeaways

  • HDFC Mutual Fund acquired 23 lakh shares of Molbio Diagnostics at ₹1,315 per share.
  • The transaction was worth ₹302.45 crore and represented a 1.99% stake in the company.
  • Business Excellence Trust III simultaneously sold 23.28 lakh shares, reducing its holding by about 2.02 percentage points.

HDFC Mutual Fund has purchased a 1.99% stake in Molbio Diagnostics in a transaction valued at just over ₹302 crore.

The asset manager acquired 23 lakh shares in the Goa-based diagnostics company at ₹1,315 apiece, taking the total value of the acquisition to ₹302.45 crore.

The purchase was accompanied by a reduction in the holding of an existing institutional investor.

Business Excellence Trust III, managed by Motilal Oswal Private Equity, sold 23.28 lakh shares at ₹1,315.01 per share. The transaction was worth ₹306.26 crore and reduced its stake in Molbio Diagnostics by roughly 2.02 percentage points.

Molbio Diagnostics develops diagnostic solutions, including molecular testing technologies.

For HDFC Mutual Fund, the acquisition represents another sizeable institutional equity transaction rather than a new mutual fund product or scheme-level development.

The distinction matters because holdings disclosed at the mutual fund house level can be spread across different underlying schemes. Each scheme remains governed by its own mandate, diversification requirements and portfolio strategy.

Individual fund investors therefore need to refer to the relevant scheme portfolio if they want to determine whether, and to what extent, their particular fund has exposure to the company.

The transaction should also not be interpreted as a performance signal.

Portfolio purchases by large asset managers are factual indicators of changes in institutional ownership, but subsequent stock returns depend on several company-specific and market-wide factors.

In this case, the size of the deal is what makes it noteworthy.

A ₹302.45 crore purchase has given HDFC Mutual Fund a 1.99% ownership position in Molbio Diagnostics, while an existing private-equity investor has reduced its stake by a similar amount.
