Key Takeaways

  • Debt-oriented mutual funds registered approximately ₹1.83 lakh crore in net withdrawals during September 2026.
  • Liquid funds alone experienced net outflows of ₹95,743.20 crore, reversing their positive flows from August.
  • The withdrawals contributed to industry-wide net outflows of ₹1,33,375.57 crore and a reduction in total mutual fund assets.

Debt Fund Redemptions Increase Sharply

India's debt mutual fund industry recorded net withdrawals of approximately ₹1.83 lakh crore in September 2026, reversing the relatively modest outflows reported in August.

The Association of Mutual Funds in India's latest monthly statistics showed that debt fund redemptions were the principal contributor to the industry's overall negative net flows.

The category had recorded net withdrawals of around ₹8,127 crore in August.

September's outflows were considerably larger, with liquid funds accounting for a substantial portion of the withdrawals.

Liquid Funds Account for Major Share of Withdrawals

Liquid mutual funds recorded net outflows of ₹95,743.20 crore during September.

This followed net inflows of ₹19,934.29 crore in August, representing a sharp reversal in monthly investment activity.

Liquid funds invest in short-term debt and money-market instruments. Their portfolios commonly include treasury bills, commercial paper and certificates of deposit within applicable maturity restrictions.

Because these funds are frequently used for short-term liquidity management, their monthly flows can be influenced by large institutional transactions.

However, the AMFI figures alone do not establish the precise reason for September's withdrawals.

The data should therefore be interpreted as evidence of a sharp change in net transactions rather than proof of a particular investor motivation.

Overall Mutual Fund Industry Records Net Withdrawals

Across all mutual fund categories, the industry reported net outflows of ₹1,33,375.57 crore in September, compared with net inflows of ₹41,353.60 crore in August.

The decline occurred despite net inflows of ₹38,306.55 crore into equity-oriented mutual funds.

Total industry assets under management fell to ₹82.64 lakh crore from ₹87.08 lakh crore in the preceding month.

Debt fund outflows and equity fund inflows are calculated separately and should not be confused with changes in asset values caused by movements in securities prices.

The September statistics highlight the extent to which transactions in fixed-income schemes can influence the mutual fund industry's aggregate monthly flows, even when equity subscriptions remain positive.
