Iran Rules Out Reopening Strait of Hormuz Until US Meets Its Demands
Last Updated: 21st September 2026 - 01:01 pm
Iran has ruled out reopening the Strait of Hormuz or returning to its earlier negotiating framework with the United States until Washington meets Tehran’s conditions, adding another layer of uncertainty to the confrontation between the two countries.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tehran had already communicated its demands to the US through intermediaries. Iran would not reconsider its position until those conditions were fulfilled, its rights were recognised and Washington met its commitments.
The position keeps the Strait of Hormuz at the centre of the dispute. The waterway is an important route for global energy shipments, and restrictions on maritime traffic have raised concerns about disruption to international trade and oil supplies.
Iran maintains its position on Strait of Hormuz
Ghalibaf made clear that Tehran sees its conditions as a prerequisite for any change in its current approach.
The position covers both the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a possible return to the previous framework for negotiations with Washington.
His remarks come amid warnings from Iran’s central military command over the possibility of further US military action.
The Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned that any renewed American military operation against Iran would be met with attacks on US bases and interests across the region.
The Iranian military command also warned countries in the region against assisting a US operation, maintaining that states providing such support would be treated as participants in the action.
US says 109 commercial vessels redirected
The confrontation has also continued at sea.
US Central Command said its forces had redirected 109 commercial vessels as of September 20 as part of Washington’s enforcement of its naval blockade against Iran.
The US military resumed enforcement of the blockade on maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports on July 14.
The Strait of Hormuz remains closely tied to the wider dispute, with both maritime access and the blockade featuring in the conditions being discussed between the two sides.
Tehran’s conditions include end to naval blockade
In a statement, Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei had stated that some conditions were presented by Tehran through Qatar to put an end to the confrontation.
These conditions included ending the hostilities in all fronts, the lifting of the frozen Iranian money and ending the naval blockade.
President Donald Trump of the US, on his part, has made it clear that Iran would face serious repercussions if it does not mend its ways.
However, at the same time, it is learnt that President Trump may be willing to negotiate with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, at the UN General Assembly in New York.
This comes as global leaders are meeting at the UN General Assembly where the confrontation between the US and Iran and tensions in West Asia are set to be discussed along with other international issues.
For the time being, it appears that the opening of the Strait of Hormuz is dependent on Tehran’s conditions from Washington without any hint from the report regarding their fulfillment.
