The Indian stock markets are going to have a long weekend as trading in the BSE and NSE will remain closed on Friday, October 2, in honor of Gandhi Jayanti.

With the holiday preceding the weekend, it means that the equity markets will not see any regular trading for three consecutive days. After the close of Thursday's session, traders will have to wait till October 5 when the markets open again on Monday.

October 2 is one of the trading holidays that have been planned for the year 2026 and it marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi throughout India.

Three-Days Off for Dalal Street

The holiday on Friday is going to directly coincide with the weekend as October 3 is going to fall on a Saturday and October 4 on a Sunday.

Thursday, October 1, is the last trading day of the week and trading at the BSE and NSE is going to resume on Monday.

This will also be the second three-day break for the stock market in less than a month. Trading was earlier halted from September 12 to September 14, when the regular weekend was followed by the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday.

More Market Holidays Coming Up

Gandhi Jayanti will not be the only weekday market holiday in October. The exchanges are also scheduled to remain closed on October 20 for Dussehra.

Beyond October, trading holidays are lined up for Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10 and Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev on November 24. Christmas on December 25 will be the final scheduled market holiday of 2026.

There is one exception worth noting during the Diwali period. November 8, which falls on a Sunday, is listed as a trading holiday for Diwali Laxmi Pujan, but the exchanges will conduct a special Muhurat Trading session. The timings for that session will be announced separately.

For now, Thursday’s closing bell will mark the beginning of a three-day pause for Dalal Street, with regular trading returning on Monday, October 5.
