Jio Platforms enters the public market with a vast Indian connectivity business, while Bharti Airtel remains an established listed competitor. Their operating figures reveal an important contrast: Jio serves a larger broadband subscriber base, but Airtel earns more monthly revenue per mobile customer. The IPO also brings Jio’s earnings valuation into focus. Here is what the latest available disclosures show.

Jio and Bharti Airtel: Key Numbers Compared

Metric Jio Platforms / RJIL Bharti Airtel
Broadband subscriptions, August 2026 53.803 crore 38.639 crore
Broadband market share, August 2026 48.86% 35.09%
India monthly ARPU, June 2026 quarter ₹215.60 ₹264
ARPU, March 2026 quarter ₹214 ₹257
FY26 diluted EPS ₹33.59 ₹44.37
P/E multiple 33.31× implied at ₹1,119 40.71× (RHP peer comparison)
Broadband shares calculated from TRAI’s August 2026 total of 110.121 crore subscriptions. Airtel FY26 EPS and P/E are cited from the peer comparison referred to in Jio’s RHP; the full peer-table pages should be checked before publication. The two ARPU figures refer to India mobile/service operations, while Jio’s FY26 EPS is consolidated.

Subscriber Scale: Jio Leads the Broadband Market

TRAI’s August 2026 release puts Reliance Jio Infocomm at 53.803 crore broadband subscriptions, against 38.639 crore for Bharti Airtel. Jio therefore had approximately 15.16 crore more broadband connections. Against the industry’s 110.121 crore broadband connections, those figures translate into market shares of approximately 48.86% and 35.09%, respectively. These are broadband shares covering wired and wireless connections, not shares of every mobile SIM in India.

Jio’s prospectus separately shows 53.33 crore total customers at June-end, up from 49.81 crore a year earlier. That is growth of about 7.1% on the company’s reported customer measure. It added 89 lakh customers in the June quarter. Together, the figures demonstrate Jio’s ability to expand an already large base.

ARPU: Airtel Leads on Revenue per User

The June 2026 quarterly figures offer a direct comparison. Jio reported average monthly revenue per user of ₹215.60, up from ₹208.80 a year earlier. Airtel reported India mobile ARPU of ₹264, versus ₹250 in the comparable quarter. The difference was ₹48.40 per month in Airtel’s favour. Jio’s March-quarter ARPU was ₹214, while Airtel reported ₹257. Both operators improved their monetisation in the subsequent quarter.

The difference matters because adding customers does not automatically produce equivalent revenue growth. Higher spending per customer can support earnings and network investment. Jio’s scale is a strength; Airtel’s stronger ARPU shows why customer quality and product mix deserve equal attention.

Jio’s IPO Valuation: What Does the P/E Show?

According to Jio Platforms’ Red Herring Prospectus (RHP), Bharti Airtel’s P/E ratio stood at 40.71×, compared with Jio’s implied P/E of approximately 33.31× at the upper IPO price band of ₹1,119 per share. On those stated bases, Jio is offered at a lower earnings multiple, although differences in business mix, capital structure, and accounting treatment limit any simple valuation verdict.

The RHP reports Jio Platforms FY26 revenue of ₹1,46,885.3 crore, EBITDA of ₹76,255.4 crore and profit after tax of ₹30,049.1 crore. Its June 2026 quarter revenue reached ₹39,172.9 crore and EBITDA ₹20,864.5 crore. These audited/restated prospectus figures help investors assess the earnings underpinning the issue price, beyond subscriber counts alone.

What the Comparison Means for Investors

Jio’s edge lies in its subscriber reach and expanding broadband services, whereas Airtel reports higher India mobile revenue per user. Valuation is the third part of the picture: Jio’s IPO P/E appears lower than the cited peer multiple, but its future performance still depends on tariff realisations, capital expenditure, customer retention and returns from digital services. Those operating drivers are more useful than treating any single ratio as a buy signal.

Conclusion

The figures suggest two different strengths: Jio’s broader broadband footprint and Airtel’s stronger mobile ARPU. For Jio IPO readers, the key question is how effectively its large customer base can translate into sustainable earnings without excessive capital spending. The official disclosures provide enough information to make that comparison directly, while the remaining valuation caveats are best addressed transparently.
