Nifty Falls 6% in September Series, Auto and Realty Among Worst-Hit Sectors
Last Updated: 29th September 2026 - 05:16 pm
The September series ended on a weak note for Indian equities, with the Nifty falling 6% over the period and recording its worst September series in 25 years.
Trading remained unsettled on Tuesday, which was also the Nifty monthly expiry day. The index slipped below the 22,700 mark after moving away from the day’s high, while the Sensex was down 300 points.
The weakness stretched beyond the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap index fell for a fourth consecutive session, while smallcap stocks also remained under pressure.
September proved difficult across most sectors. Pharma was the only sector to finish the series with gains, while auto, realty and PSU banking stocks were the worst performers during the period. Smallcap and midcap indices also snapped a five-series winning run.
During Tuesday’s session, IT and consumer durable stocks were among those facing selling pressure. Metal and pharmaceutical shares moved in the opposite direction, holding up better despite weakness in the broader market.
Among Nifty 50 companies, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Tata Steel were the leading gainers. Titan, HCL Technologies and HDFC Life were among the biggest losers.
The rupee also weakened during the day, falling past 96 against the US dollar and touching a two-month low.
The close of the September series leaves behind a month marked by broad-based declines, with pharma standing apart as the only sector to end the series in positive territory.
