The Nifty 50 maintained its upward momentum on Tuesday, October 13, although some profit booking emerged after the index touched an intraday high of 22,581.15. At around 1:45 PM, Nifty 50 was trading at 22,556, gaining nearly 193 points or 0.86%. Meanwhile, India VIX fell 7% to below 14.20, reflecting a reduction in expected market volatility.

The options market presents an interesting picture ahead of the weekly expiry. While put-side additions have been considerably stronger than those on the call side, fresh positioning at higher call strikes could make further gains difficult without a decisive breakout.

The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) has eased from 1.44 to 1.17, suggesting that the relative dominance of put open interest has reduced. Nevertheless, the ratio remains above 1, indicating that put open interest continues to exceed call open interest. Max Pain has remained steady at 22,550, making it an important reference level for the expiry session.

Strong Put OI Build-Up Places 22,500 in Focus

A closer examination of the put option chain shows that the 22,500 strike has attracted the largest addition in open interest, followed by 22,550. The 22,500 strike also accounts for the highest outstanding put open interest, making it the first major support level to monitor.

Further down, 22,400 has the second-highest concentration of put open interest. This level could become relevant if the index fails to hold 22,500 during the session.

The difference between put and call positioning is particularly noticeable in the overall figures. Total put open interest stands at 36.17 crore, against 30.95 crore on the call side. Between the morning session and approximately 1:26 PM, put open interest increased by 20.60 crore, compared with an addition of just 4.72 crore in call open interest.

The significantly higher increase on the put side, combined with the rise in Nifty, is consistent with traders building put-writing positions in anticipation of support holding at lower strikes. However, changes in open interest must be read alongside option premiums to distinguish writing from buying.

For now, the concentration of positions at 22,500 suggests that this strike will play an important role in determining whether the recovery can continue into expiry.

Call Writers Active at 22,600 Level

The call option chain shows a different pattern. Several lower strikes, particularly between 22,200 and 22,450, have witnessed open interest unwinding. The reduction in outstanding positions at these strikes suggests that some traders have closed their earlier call positions as Nifty moved higher.

However, fresh positions have appeared around the current market price and above it.

The 22,600 strike has recorded the largest addition in call open interest, followed by 22,550. These two strikes also account for the highest and second-highest outstanding call open interest, respectively.

This positioning makes the 22,550–22,600 region important for the next directional move. While 22,550 remains a near-term pivot, 22,600 is the stronger overhead resistance based on the current concentration of call positions.

Interestingly, Nifty's intraday high of 22,581.15 was recorded just below this resistance. The subsequent pullback indicates that the index has not yet managed to overcome the selling pressure near the upper end of the expected range.

If Nifty manages to cross 22,600 and hold above it, traders with short call positions at that strike may have to adjust their exposure. Such adjustments could add momentum to the upward move.

How Traders Can Approach the Weekly Expiry

The options data currently points towards a broader trading range of 22,400–22,600, with 22,500 acting as immediate support and 22,600 representing the major resistance.

Within this range, the behaviour of Nifty around 22,550 could provide important clues about the next move.

If Nifty moves above 22,600

A sustained breakout above 22,600 would indicate that buyers have managed to overcome the strike with the highest call open interest. If the move is accompanied by call unwinding at 22,600 and fresh put positioning at higher strikes, it would strengthen the bullish case.

For traders looking for long positions, waiting for confirmation on a 15-minute candle may help distinguish a genuine breakout from a temporary move above resistance.

If Nifty falls below 22,500

A sustained decline below 22,500 would weaken the immediate support structure. Since this strike carries the highest put open interest, a breakdown could force some put writers to reduce or shift their positions.

Such activity could accelerate the decline towards 22,400, where the next major concentration of put open interest is visible.
A bearish position would carry greater conviction if the breakdown is accompanied by put unwinding at 22,500 and an inability of the index to recover above that level.

If Nifty remains between 22,500 and 22,600

A lack of movement beyond these strikes could keep Nifty confined to a narrow range, with 22,550 acting as the central reference point.

In such conditions, option premiums may lose value rapidly due to time decay and lower implied volatility. Traders following option-selling strategies may consider defined-risk spreads, but sudden movements near expiry can still result in sharp losses.
Directional option buyers should avoid chasing short-lived movements within the range, where repeated reversals can erode premiums even if the broader market view is correct.

What Does the Options Data Suggest for Expiry?

The overall positioning continues to favour the put side, with substantial open interest additions at 22,500 providing a potential cushion against declines. At the same time, the build-up at 22,550 and 22,600 on the call side indicates that sellers may attempt to restrict further upside.

This leaves the index at an important point. Holding above 22,500 would keep the positive intraday structure intact, while a sustained move beyond 22,600 could force a reassessment of the current trading range.

On the downside, failure to defend 22,500 would shift attention towards 22,400.

For traders, the priority should be to observe how open interest changes when Nifty approaches these strikes, rather than relying solely on the existing concentration of positions. Until a confirmed break occurs, the options market suggests that 22,500–22,600 could remain the immediate battleground, with 22,550 serving as the central reference level for the weekly expiry.
