Indian equity markets opened Wednesday's trading session on a positive note following reports that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had described an India-US trade agreement as incredibly close. However, the early optimism faded as the session progressed, with selling pressure dragging the benchmark indices sharply lower from their intraday highs.

Elevated crude oil prices and firm US Treasury yields weighed on investor sentiment, while a sharp rise in India VIX to a 4-month high reflected growing nervousness in the market. Despite the intraday weakness, the Nifty recovered during the closing auction session (CAS), limiting its losses towards the end of trading.

The Nifty 50 settled at 22,811.35, down 77.60 points or 0.34%, extending its decline for the second consecutive session. The BSE Sensex ended 143.21 points or 0.19% lower at 73,709.69. Banking stocks also remained under pressure, with the Bank Nifty declining 511.20 points or 0.92% to close at 54,976.90, slipping below the psychological level of 55,000.

Nifty IT Index Surges 2.88% to 8-Month High; Auto and Metal Index Decline

The weakness was visible across most sectors on Wednesday, with the Nifty IT index emerging as the only sectoral index to close in positive territory.

The Nifty IT index gained 2.88% to settle at an 8-month high, with all its constituents ending the session in the green. The strong performance of technology stocks stood in contrast to the overall market weakness and helped limit losses in the benchmark indices.

Meanwhile, Nifty Metal and Nifty Auto were among the worst-performing sectoral indices as selling pressure continued across several other segments of the market.

The contrasting performance of IT stocks and the broader market highlighted the uneven nature of Wednesday's trading session, with gains concentrated in technology shares while most sectors ended lower.

Nifty Smallcap Index Falls Over 2% to 4-Month Low; 362 Stocks Hit 52-Week Lows

Selling pressure was particularly severe in the broader markets, where midcap and smallcap stocks recorded significantly sharper losses than the benchmark indices.

The Nifty Smallcap 100 index declined over 2% to close at a 4-month low, while the Nifty Midcap 100 index fell 1.58%, ending the session at a 6-month low.

Market breadth remained firmly negative, with declining stocks substantially outnumbering advancing stocks.

Of the 3,698 stocks traded on the NSE, only 608 advanced, while 2,988 declined and 102 remained unchanged.

The extent of the weakness was also reflected in the number of stocks touching their yearly lows. During Wednesday's session, as many as 362 stocks hit their 52-week lows, compared with just 44 stocks reaching fresh 52-week highs.

Additionally, 254 stocks touched their lower circuit limits, while 62 stocks reached their upper circuit limits, indicating that selling pressure was widespread across the market.

Crude Oil Nears $111 as Uncertainty Over US-Iran Talks Persists

Elevated crude oil prices continued to remain a major concern for Indian equities on Wednesday, with Brent crude moving closer to $111 per barrel and resuming its advance towards a five-month high.

Oil prices had declined sharply on Tuesday following reports that Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, had met senior Iranian diplomatic and military officials in Tehran to discuss bilateral relations and the status of negotiations with Washington.

The development had initially raised hopes of progress towards a diplomatic agreement. However, a diplomat involved in the discussions subsequently dismissed reports that a deal was imminent, although efforts to end the conflict were continuing.
Crude oil prices have risen more than 10% this month as escalating hostilities involving Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi forces, along with the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict, have increased concerns over global energy supplies.

For India, which relies heavily on imported crude oil, sustained higher prices remain a concern as they can increase the country's import bill, add to inflationary pressures and raise operating costs for businesses.

US 10-Year Treasury Yield Holds Near 5.13% Amid Inflation Concerns

The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note remained near 5.13% on Wednesday, recovering from the previous session's decline as rising crude oil prices renewed concerns over inflation.

Higher energy prices have strengthened expectations that interest rates could remain elevated or rise further if inflationary pressures persist.

Firm US bond yields added another source of pressure for emerging markets, including India, where investors were already assessing the impact of elevated oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty.

European Markets Trade Higher; UK Inflation Raises Rate Hike Expectations

Major European equity markets were trading in positive territory on Wednesday, October 21, even as higher-than-expected UK inflation raised concerns over further interest rate increases by the Bank of England.

Germany's DAX advanced 164.99 points, or 0.65%, to trade at 25,469.41. France's CAC 40 also gained 40.99 points, or 0.52%, to reach 7,879.48.

The broader STOXX Europe 600 index rose 3.17 points, or 0.50%, to 641.81, reflecting gains across European equities.

Meanwhile, Britain's FTSE 100 remained largely unchanged, edging higher by just 8.56 points, or 0.08%, to 10,741.56.

The limited movement in the UK benchmark came after inflation rose to 3.5% in September, exceeding economists' expectations of 3.4%. Higher energy prices, driven by the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran, contributed to the increase.

According to LSEG data, money markets were pricing in a 98.8% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike by the Bank of England in November.

Gains in energy stocks, supported by firmer crude oil prices, helped offset some of the pressure on British equities from the inflation data.

All four major European indices were trading higher at the time of observation, with European markets still open for trading.

US Stock Futures Trade Mostly Higher; Nasdaq Leads Gains Ahead of Wall Street Opening

US equity futures were trading mostly higher on Wednesday as investors assessed corporate earnings, developments in artificial intelligence investment and continuing geopolitical uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict.

Dow Jones futures were largely unchanged, slipping by just 1 point to 52,718.

Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures advanced 14.50 points, or 0.19%, to 7,769.75.

Nasdaq 100 futures recorded stronger gains, rising 142.50 points, or 0.48%, to 29,817.75, indicating relatively better sentiment towards technology stocks ahead of the US market opening.

Investor attention also remained focused on developments surrounding major US technology companies. Reports concerning Anthropic's financial performance and Meta Platforms' upcoming quarterly results were among the developments being closely watched.

Comments from Elon Musk regarding a potential merger between SpaceX and Tesla also attracted attention, alongside broader discussions around artificial intelligence investment and corporate spending.

Despite the modest gains in US futures, uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict and the impact of elevated crude oil prices on inflation continued to remain important factors influencing global market sentiment.
