Reliance Industries emerged as the most-bought stock by domestic mutual funds in September 2026, with fund managers deploying nearly ₹6,000 crore into the company during the month.
BSE ranked second, receiving more than ₹5,500 crore in net mutual fund investment, according to Prime Database figures cited by Business Standard.
The buying in BSE coincided with the stock's entry into the Nifty 50 on September 30. Mutual funds also participated in a block transaction in which shares were sold by Goldman Sachs and BNP Paribas.
HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Swiggy completed the top five stocks by mutual fund buying during the month.
Another capital-market business, the National Stock Exchange, attracted investments of around ₹3,408 crore, including pre-IPO and anchor investments. PB Fintech also appeared among the 15 most-bought names, with mutual funds adding shares worth around ₹1,747 crore.
The September data also showed meaningful selling in parts of the technology and industrial sectors. Wipro, Larsen & Toubro and Tata Consultancy Services were among the largest mutual fund stock sales during the month.
Monthly mutual fund portfolio data offers a snapshot of how the industry's equity holdings changed, but it does not necessarily indicate a common market view across all schemes. Purchases can be influenced by fresh inflows, benchmark changes, corporate transactions and scheme-specific portfolio decisions.
Similarly, an increase or decrease in a stock's aggregate mutual fund holding should not be treated as a recommendation. Different fund categories and individual schemes operate under different mandates.
The September figures nevertheless highlight the scale of institutional activity around Reliance Industries and BSE, with both companies attracting more than ₹5,000 crore of mutual fund buying during the month.
