The Sensex staged a recovery from its intraday lows during Thursday's trading session on October 22, 2026, as the weekly derivatives expiry witnessed a noticeable change in options positioning. After slipping towards 73,080.64 during the late morning session, the index recovered handsomely to reclaim the 73,400 mark.

At approximately 1:04 PM, the Sensex traded at 73,407.79, down 301.90 points or 0.41%.

The latest options data indicates that the derivatives structure has improved compared with the previous snapshot. The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) has risen from 0.93 to 1.01, while Max Pain has shifted higher from 73,300 to 73,400.

More importantly, total Call open interest has declined, while Put OI has moved above Call OI. This development coincides with the Sensex recovery and suggests that some of the earlier Call-side pressure has eased.

However, substantial Call positioning remains concentrated at 73,500 and 74,000, making the next phase of the recovery particularly important.

Sensex Options PCR Moves Above 1 as Call OI Declines

The latest Sensex options data shows total Call OI at approximately 8.65 crore contracts, compared with Put OI of 8.76 crore.
This represents a notable change from earlier data, when Call OI stood at 9.5 crore and Put OI at 8.9 crore.

The reduction in Call OI has been considerably larger than the decline in Put OI. Consequently, the all-strike PCR has improved to 1.01, compared with 0.93 earlier.

A PCR above 1 indicates that Put OI now marginally exceeds Call OI. Although the difference remains relatively small, the shift is significant because it has occurred alongside a recovery in the underlying index.

The reduction in outstanding Call positions is consistent with some Call-side unwinding, which may have helped ease resistance during the rebound. However, open interest data alone cannot establish whether the positions were closed by writers or buyers.

The improvement in PCR supports a more balanced expiry setup, but the index still needs to sustain above nearby resistance levels before the recovery can be considered stronger.

73,500 Emerges as the Next Major Hurdle

Despite the improvement in the overall options structure, the Call side continues to show substantial positioning at higher strikes.

The 74,000 strike carries the highest visible Call OI at approximately 68 lakh contracts, making it the strongest overhead resistance in the available snapshot.

Closer to the prevailing market price, 73,500 carries approximately 42 lakh Call OI, followed by significant positioning at 73,600, 73,700 and 73,800.

The Change in OI chart shows fresh Call additions of approximately 28 lakh at 73,500 and 27 lakh at 73,600. The largest visible Call addition is concentrated at 74,000, where around 45 lakh contracts have been added.

These concentrations suggest that although overall Call OI has declined, meaningful resistance remains above 73,400.
For the Sensex, the first challenge is to sustain above 73,400 and establish a convincing move past 73,500.

A sustained breakout above 73,500, accompanied by a reduction in Call OI at nearby strikes, could open the way towards 73,600–73,700.

Beyond these levels, 74,000 remains the next major hurdle.

However, if the index repeatedly fails to cross 73,500, the recovery could lose momentum and lead to renewed selling pressure towards 73,300–73,200.

73,000 Remains the Strongest Put Support

The Put side continues to show its highest concentration at 73,000, where OI has increased to approximately 82 lakh contracts.

This is higher than the approximately 75 lakh contracts visible in the earlier snapshot, indicating that the strike continues to attract substantial positioning.

The 73,200 strike carries approximately 52 lakh Put OI, while 72,500 holds nearly 50 lakh. Other notable concentrations are visible at 73,100 and 72,800.

The Change in OI data reinforces the importance of 73,000, with approximately 66 lakh fresh Put contracts added at this strike.

Additional Put OI increases are visible at 73,200, 73,100 and 72,800.

This establishes a layered support structure below the prevailing Sensex level.

With the index recovering towards 73,400, the 73,300–73,200 zone now becomes the first important support area.

As long as the Sensex sustains above this zone, the possibility of another attempt towards 73,500 remains open.

However, a decisive break below 73,200 could again bring 73,000 into focus.

The substantial Put concentration at 73,000 makes it the most important lower support reference for the remaining expiry session. A breakdown below this strike, particularly alongside Put unwinding, could expose the index to 72,800 and subsequently 72,500.

Fresh Put Additions Continue to Outpace Call Additions

The Change in OI figures show that fresh Put additions remain substantially higher than Call additions.

As of approximately 1:04 PM, cumulative Put OI additions stood at 5.75 crore, compared with Call additions of 3.04 crore.
Earlier, fresh Put additions stood at 5.91 crore, while Call additions were 3.86 crore.

The decline in cumulative Call additions, alongside the recovery in the Sensex, indicates that some of the earlier increase in Call positioning has been reversed.

Meanwhile, the comparatively smaller reduction in Put additions suggests that the Put-side structure has remained more stable.

This change is relevant because the earlier decline towards 73,080.65 occurred despite considerable fresh Put positioning. The subsequent rebound has been accompanied by a more balanced distribution of outstanding contracts.

Nevertheless, the higher Put additions should not be interpreted as confirmed bullish writing activity without additional position-level information.

For the remainder of the session, the key signal will be whether Call OI continues to decline around 73,500–73,600 while Put positioning remains firm around 73,200–73,000.

Max Pain Moves Higher to 73,400

The latest Max Pain reading provides another indication of the changing expiry structure.

During the morning session, Max Pain was positioned at 73,500. It subsequently declined to 73,300 as the Sensex came under pressure.

Following the recovery in the index, Max Pain has moved higher to 73,400.

With the Sensex trading near 73,393 in the 1:05 PM snapshot, the index is now almost exactly aligned with the theoretical minimum-payout level.

This makes 73,400 an important intraday reference point.

If the Sensex maintains its position above 73,400, the market could attempt to test the nearby Call concentrations at 73,500 and 73,600.

On the other hand, a failure to sustain above 73,400 could lead to another round of consolidation or weakness towards 73,300.

Max Pain remains a theoretical options metric rather than a guaranteed settlement target. Nevertheless, its movement from 73,300 to 73,400 reflects the adjustment in outstanding positions during the rebound.

Sensex Weekly Expiry Outlook: Key Levels and Trading Roadmap

The latest options structure suggests that the sharp bearish pressure visible earlier in the session has moderated. The Sensex has recovered from the 73,180 region, the PCR has crossed above 1, and overall Call OI has declined.

However, the market is not yet showing a confirmed bullish breakout, as significant Call concentrations remain immediately above the current price.

Bullish scenario: A sustained move above 73,500, supported by declining Call OI at nearby strikes, could extend the recovery towards 73,600–73,700. A further breakout would bring 74,000 into focus.

Range-bound scenario: If the Sensex holds above 73,200 but struggles to cross 73,500, the expiry session could witness consolidation within the 73,200–73,500 range. With Max Pain at 73,400, frequent movements around this level remain possible.

Bearish scenario: If the index slips below 73,200, the recovery would begin to weaken. A sustained break below 73,000, especially with Put unwinding, could increase downside pressure towards 72,800–72,500.

The important development is the shift in options positioning rather than the price recovery alone. Total Put OI has marginally overtaken Call OI, the PCR has improved to 1.0125, and Max Pain has moved higher to 73,400.

For the remaining weekly expiry session, 73,400 will serve as the immediate pivot, while 73,500 is the level bulls need to overcome to strengthen the recovery. On the downside, 73,200 is the first important support, followed by the much stronger Put base at 73,000.

The next directional move will depend on whether the Sensex can move beyond the 73,500 Call concentration or whether selling pressure returns and pushes the index back below 73,200.
