Sensex Weekly Expiry Outlook October 08, 2026: Call Writers Dominate as 72,300 Becomes Crucial
Last Updated: 8th October 2026 - 11:15 am
The Sensex witnessed a volatile start to Thursday's trading session on October 8, 2026, as selling pressure dragged the benchmark lower during the opening hour. After trading at higher levels initially, the index slipped towards the 72,200 region before attempting a modest recovery.
The latest available intraday reading placed Sensex at 72,253.24, while the Put-Call Ratio (PCR) stood at 0.8470 and Max Pain was positioned at 72,300.
The options market presents an interesting picture ahead of the weekly expiry. Call writers have strengthened their presence at strikes above the prevailing market price, particularly at 72,500. Meanwhile, Put writers have added positions at lower strikes, especially around 72,000.
This positioning suggests that the index faces immediate resistance during recovery attempts, even as substantial Put open interest provides potential support at lower levels.
Falling PCR Reflects Pressure on the Index
One of the notable developments during the morning session was the movement in the Put-Call Ratio.
The intraday PCR chart shows that the ratio briefly climbed above 1 during the early minutes before declining sharply. Although it recovered from its intraday lows, the latest reading remained below 0.85.
A PCR below 1 means that outstanding Call open interest is greater than Put open interest across the tracked contracts.
The aggregate open interest figures reinforce this observation. Total Call OI stood at approximately 859.97 lakh, against Put OI of 728.37 lakh.
The difference of around 131.60 lakh reflects the heavier concentration of outstanding positions on the Call side.
However, a lower PCR should not automatically be interpreted as a signal of further market decline. Its significance depends on whether the increase in Call positioning comes from fresh writing, existing positions or changes in other parts of the options chain.
In the current session, the strike-wise changes show meaningful fresh Call additions above spot, making the nearby resistance levels particularly relevant.
Fresh Call Positions Build a Barrier Near 72,500
The most significant development in the options chain is the concentration of Call open interest between 72,300 and 72,500.
At the 72,500 strike, outstanding Call OI stood near 68 lakh, making it the largest visible Call concentration in the available data.
The Change OI chart also shows that approximately 59 lakh in fresh Call positions were added at this strike during the observed period.
This combination of high outstanding OI and sizeable fresh additions makes 72,500 a major resistance reference for the expiry session.
The challenge for Sensex begins even before that level.
Both 72,300 and 72,400 carry substantial Call interest, with fresh additions of roughly 40–41 lakh at each strike. This suggests that the region immediately above the prevailing market price has attracted considerable Call-side activity.
Further up, 73,000 has an outstanding Call base of approximately 64 lakh, accompanied by fresh additions of nearly 35 lakh.
As a result, the index faces a series of resistance levels rather than a single overhead hurdle.
A recovery above 72,300 would be the first indication of improving intraday sentiment. However, the move would need to extend beyond 72,400 and 72,500 to meaningfully challenge the current Call-heavy structure.
If Sensex sustains above 72,500 and Call positions begin unwinding, the next area of interest could shift towards 72,700–72,800.
Put Writers Strengthen Their Position at 72,000
While Call writers remain active at higher strikes, the Put side presents a different picture below the market.
The 72,000 strike has emerged as the largest visible Put OI concentration, with approximately 70 lakh in outstanding positions.
It also recorded the strongest fresh Put addition, at nearly 47 lakh, according to the Change OI chart.
This makes 72,000 an important support reference based on the options structure.
Closer to the prevailing index level, 72,200 carries approximately 38 lakh in Put OI, along with fresh additions of around 30 lakh.
The presence of these positions makes 72,200 a key level to monitor during the remaining expiry session.
If Sensex manages to hold above this region, the index could attempt another recovery towards 72,300.
However, sustained trading below 72,200 would weaken the immediate support structure and could bring 72,100 and 72,000 into focus.
Notably, fresh Put additions are also visible across several strikes below 72,000, including 71,800, 71,900 and 71,500.
This indicates that Put-side positioning extends across lower strikes, although 72,000 remains the most prominent concentration.
Max Pain Shifts Lower as Sensex Struggles to Recover
Another important development is the change in the Max Pain level during the morning session.
The Max Pain chart indicates that the level began near 72,600 before gradually moving lower. It subsequently declined towards 72,500 and 72,400 before settling at 72,300.
The downward movement occurred alongside weakness in the underlying index.
At the latest observed spot reading of 72,253.24, Sensex was trading approximately 47 points below Max Pain.
This places 72,300 at the centre of the immediate expiry setup.
Max Pain represents the strike at which the calculated aggregate payout to option holders would be the lowest, based on outstanding open interest. It is often monitored during expiry sessions, but it does not necessarily determine where the index will settle.
In the current setup, its importance comes from its proximity to the market price and the sizeable Call positioning around the same strike.
If Sensex moves back above 72,300 and manages to sustain there, the index could attempt to challenge the next resistance at 72,400.
On the other hand, repeated failures to reclaim 72,300 would indicate that sellers continue to maintain control of the immediate trading range.

Can Sensex Defend 72,200 or Will Call Writers Tighten Their Grip?
The options data suggests that Sensex has entered Thursday's weekly expiry with a cautious to bearish undertone.
The PCR at 0.8470 indicates that Call OI continues to outweigh Put OI, while the sizeable fresh Call additions at 72,300, 72,400 and 72,500 show that overhead positioning has strengthened.
At the same time, aggressive Put additions at 72,000 and 72,200 suggest that traders are also building positions below the market.
This has created a closely contested trading structure, with the index positioned between nearby Call resistance and Put-backed support.
For an upside recovery, the first requirement would be a sustained move above 72,300. Such a move could bring 72,400 into focus, followed by the more significant 72,500 hurdle.
A break above 72,500, particularly with evidence of Call unwinding, could encourage further recovery towards 72,700–72,800.
On the downside, 72,200 remains the immediate level to watch. If this support fails, the index could move towards 72,000, where the strongest Put OI concentration is visible.
A decisive breach of 72,000, accompanied by Put unwinding, would weaken the support structure and increase the risk of further downside.
For now, 72,300 is the immediate expiry pivot, 72,500 is the key upside barrier and 72,000 remains the strongest Put-backed support.
With Call writers holding a relatively stronger position above spot and Max Pain having shifted lower during the morning session, the Sensex may continue to face resistance on recovery attempts unless the prevailing options positioning changes substantially.
The movement around 72,200 and 72,300 could therefore provide the first indication of whether the index stabilises or extends its decline during the October 8 weekly expiry.
