Key Takeaways:

  • Monthly mutual fund SIP contributions reached an all-time high of ₹32,297 crore in August 2026.
  • At the same time, 53.82 lakh SIP accounts were discontinued or completed their tenure during the month, the highest monthly figure since January.
  • Small-cap and mid-cap funds continued to attract sizeable flows, receiving ₹7,973.33 crore and ₹6,989.40 crore respectively in August.

India’s monthly systematic investment plan collections reached another record in August, but the headline number was accompanied by a rise in SIPs being discontinued or reaching the end of their scheduled tenure.

Investors contributed ₹32,297 crore through SIPs in August 2026, according to data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India. That was higher than ₹31,961 crore in July and represented the highest monthly SIP collection recorded by the industry.

The number of SIPs stopping during the month also increased.

AMFI recorded 53.82 lakh discontinued or tenure-completed SIPs in August, compared with 50.30 lakh in July and 50.64 lakh in June. August's figure was the highest since January 2026, when the corresponding number stood at approximately 55.5 lakh.

Fresh registrations remained higher than closures.

Around 66.4 lakh new SIPs were registered during August, while the number of outstanding SIP accounts reached 10.75 crore. Contributing accounts stood at approximately 10.02 crore, AMFI data showed.

The figures illustrate two parallel trends.

Monthly SIP contributions continue to expand even as a sizeable number of individual mandates are being stopped, cancelled or naturally completing their specified tenures. A discontinued-SIP count therefore does not necessarily represent an equal number of investors permanently exiting mutual funds.

Equity-fund flows also remained concentrated in some of the market’s smaller-cap categories during August.

Small-cap schemes received ₹7,973.33 crore, up from ₹7,767.50 crore in July. Mid-cap funds attracted ₹6,989.40 crore, compared with ₹6,192.31 crore a month earlier. Together, the two categories accounted for ₹14,962.73 crore of net inflows.

Small-cap monthly inflows have risen considerably from the beginning of the calendar year. The category received about ₹2,942 crore in January, meaning August's inflow was more than 2.5 times that level.

The broader SIP numbers remain one of the clearest indicators of recurring retail participation in mutual funds.

August's data, however, also shows why contribution totals and account activity need to be read separately. Record monthly collections can coexist with elevated closures when the overall SIP base itself has grown substantially.
