Crude oil prices increased sharply on March 19, with Brent crude futures rising $3.69, or 3.44%, to $111.07 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained $2.29, or 2.38%, to $98.61, according to Reuters data.
Attacks On Energy Infrastructure Trigger Price Rise
The surge in prices followed missile strikes on key energy facilities across the Middle East. QatarEnergy stated that Iranian strikes on Ras Laffan, a major liquefied natural gas processing hub, caused extensive damage to infrastructure, according to Reuters.
In the United Arab Emirates, authorities halted certain operations after debris from intercepted missiles impacted facilities at Habshan and the Bab oil field. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting four ballistic missiles targeting Riyadh and preventing a drone attack on a gas facility, as per Reuters.
Escalation After South Pars Strike
The developments come after a strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, which is part of the world’s largest natural gas reserve shared with Qatar. Iran had issued evacuation warnings for oil installations in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar ahead of its retaliatory action, according to Reuters.
MCX Crude Oil Prices Also Rise
In India, crude oil prices on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) increased by about 1% to ₹9,080 per barrel, reflecting the global trend in oil markets.
Supply Risks And Inventory Data
The increase in crude prices is due to concerns over supply disruptions in a region that supplies a significant portion of the world's oil. At the same time, U.S. crude inventories rose by 6.16 million barrels, marking the fourth consecutive weekly increase, according to official U.S. data cited by Reuters.
Ongoing Developments In The Region
The administration in the US is planning to send more troops to the Middle East as part of their operations in the region, Reuters reports. This escalation in the region is affecting various energy-producing nations and causing fluctuations in oil prices globally.
The fluctuations in crude oil prices are directly related to the immediate supply chain issues arising from damage to critical infrastructure in various energy-producing hubs in the Middle East.
