The Indian rupee weakened by 2 paise to settle at a fresh record low of 95.25 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday amid elevated crude oil prices and continued geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

The domestic currency opened at 95.30 against the dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market. During the trading session, the rupee touched an intraday low of 95.44 before closing at 95.25. On Monday, the rupee had closed at 95.23 against the U.S. dollar.

Crude Oil Prices Remain Elevated

Brent crude futures remained above $110 per barrel during the session, keeping pressure on oil-importing countries, including India. According to market data, Brent crude was trading at $112.64 per barrel in futures trade, down 1.57% during the session.

The Strait of Hormuz remained under focus following fresh tensions involving Iran and the U.S. The route is considered one of the world’s key oil shipping channels.

Dollar Index And Equity Markets

The dollar index, which measures the U.S. dollar against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 98.47, up 0.10%.

In the domestic equity market, the Sensex declined 251.61 points to close at 77,017.79, while the Nifty fell 86.50 points to settle at 24,032.80. Exchange data showed that Foreign Institutional Investors bought equities worth ₹2,835.62 crore on Monday.

Developments In West Asia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attacks on the UAE port city of Fujairah that injured three Indian nationals.

The incident followed drone strikes that triggered a fire in an oil industry zone in Fujairah. Iran was blamed by the UAE for conducting the assault.

These new updates have been reported amid rising tensions associated with the Strait of Hormuz and related disruptions caused by the ongoing strife in the Gulf area.
