Equity Mutual Fund Inflows Jump 19% MoM; Smallcap & Midcap Funds Receive Highest Inflows

Indian investors continued to maintain their confidence in equity mutual funds during August 2026, with equity-oriented schemes witnessing a healthy rise in inflows compared with the previous month. The data indicates that investors remained focused on long-term wealth creation, with higher preference for smallcap, midcap, flexi cap and thematic funds.
According to AMFI data, equity mutual funds received net inflows of ₹29,328.62 crore in August 2026, compared with ₹24,697.39 crore in July 2026, marking a 19% month-on-month increase.
The rise in equity inflows came despite continued market volatility, indicating that investors used market fluctuations as an opportunity to allocate funds towards growth segments.
Smallcap Funds Remain the Top Choice Among Equity Investors
Smallcap funds continued to dominate investor preference in August, attracting the highest inflows among major equity categories.
The category received ₹7,973.33 crore in August 2026, compared with ₹7,767.50 crore in July, registering a 2.65% month-on-month increase.
Midcap funds also witnessed strong buying interest, with inflows rising from ₹6,192.31 crore in July to ₹6,989.40 crore in August, reflecting a 12.87% increase.
The continued preference for smallcap and midcap funds suggests that investors are willing to take higher exposure to growth-oriented segments, expecting stronger earnings potential over the longer term.

In August 2026, sectoral and thematic categories were reported separately. While thematic funds attracted ₹1,766.19 crore, sectoral funds recorded an outflow of ₹53.19 crore.
Flexi Cap Funds Gain Traction as Investors Prefer Diversified Equity Exposure
Flexi Cap Funds also witnessed increased investor participation during the month.
Inflows in the category increased from ₹4,709.08 crore in July to ₹5,059.42 crore in August, showing a 7.44% month-on-month growth.
The flexibility offered by these funds to invest across largecap, midcap and smallcap segments has helped them remain attractive among investors seeking diversified equity exposure.
Meanwhile, thematic funds attracted ₹1,766.19 crore in August, highlighting continued interest in specific investment themes.
Gold ETF Inflows Surge as Investors Look for Portfolio Diversification
Apart from equity categories, Gold ETFs witnessed a sharp improvement in investor interest during August.
Gold ETF inflows increased to ₹2,596.70 crore in August 2026, compared with ₹1,558.75 crore in July, registering a strong 66.58% month-on-month growth.
The increase reflects investors’ preference for diversification amid uncertain global conditions and fluctuations across equity markets.
Debt Funds Witness Outflows After July Spike
Debt mutual funds saw a reversal in trend during August after receiving significant inflows in July.
The debt category recorded a net outflow of ₹8,127.32 crore in August 2026, compared with an inflow of ₹1,87,511.32 crore in July 2026.
Corporate Bond Funds witnessed the highest outflow among major debt categories, with investors withdrawing ₹3,190.17 crore. Banking and PSU Debt Funds recorded an outflow of ₹1,287.92 crore, while Gilt Funds saw withdrawals of ₹1,824.14 crore.
However, investors continued to favour shorter-duration debt products. Liquid Funds received ₹19,934.29 crore, while Money Market Funds attracted ₹11,734.71 crore during the month.
Hybrid Funds Continue to Attract Investors
Hybrid Mutual funds maintained positive momentum in August, although inflows moderated compared with July.
The category received ₹10,045.34 crore in August, compared with ₹11,490.56 crore in July.
Among hybrid categories, Arbitrage Funds attracted ₹3,789.02 crore, while Multi Asset Allocation Funds received ₹3,670.97 crore.
The continued inflows indicate that investors are increasingly looking at products offering a mix of equity participation and portfolio stability.
Index Funds Slow Down; Overseas Funds Continue to See Outflows
Index Mutual funds remained in positive territory but witnessed weaker inflows compared with the previous month.
Inflows declined from ₹1,536.60 crore in July to ₹787.49 crore in August, representing a 48.72% decline.
Fund of Funds investing overseas continued to witness mild outflows, although the pace improved. The category recorded an outflow of ₹72.19 crore in August, compared with ₹90.39 crore in July, reducing the outflow by around 20.13%
