How Much Did Gold Rise Today?

The 999-purity benchmark increased from ₹1,41,062 in the 4 November AM fixing to ₹1,43,950 in the 5 November AM fixing.

The calculation is:

Absolute change: ₹1,43,950 − ₹1,41,062 = ₹2,888

Percentage change: ₹2,888 ÷ ₹1,41,062 × 100 = 2.05%

For a fixed quantity of 10 grams of 999-purity gold, the benchmark metal value was therefore ₹2,888 higher than in the previous AM fixing, before GST, making charges and other retail costs.

What Is Driving Gold Prices?

International bullion prices were also firmer on Thursday. Spot gold gained 1.6% to $4,124.89 an ounce by 0752 GMT and had earlier reached $4,146.63, its highest level since 20 October.

The move coincided with a weaker US dollar and lower US Treasury yields. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to its lowest level since 10 September, while the dollar moved to its weakest level in more than a month.

These variables matter because gold is denominated internationally in US dollars, while bullion does not generate interest income. Changes in currency values and bond yields can therefore alter the relative cost and opportunity cost of holding gold.

What Can Higher Gold Prices Mean for Indian Markets?

Jewellery Companies

A higher underlying gold price increases the rupee value of physical inventory held by jewellery businesses. For companies replenishing inventory at higher prices, the amount of working capital needed for the same quantity of gold can also increase.

The actual effect on margins depends on inventory management, hedging arrangements and the extent to which changes in raw-material prices are passed through to retail prices.

Consumer Demand

For consumers, a higher benchmark directly increases the metal cost associated with purchasing a fixed weight of gold.

At the 5 November AM benchmark, 10 grams of 999 gold cost ₹2,888 more than at the previous trading day's AM fixing, before taxes and making charges.

Gold Imports

India imports a substantial portion of the gold used domestically. If the international price of gold rises while import volumes and exchange rates remain unchanged, the value of the country's gold import bill increases.

The rupee-dollar exchange rate can amplify or offset part of the domestic price movement because international gold transactions are largely dollar-denominated.

Gold-Loan Businesses

Higher gold prices increase the nominal market value of gold pledged as collateral. However, actual lending capacity remains dependent on applicable loan-to-value limits, lender valuation practices and other regulatory or credit requirements.

Broader Markets

Gold is also monitored as a cross-asset indicator because its price can respond to changes in the US dollar, bond yields, monetary-policy expectations and geopolitical conditions. These relationships do not by themselves determine the direction of Indian equities or other assets.
