Indian technology shares were at the centre of the stock-market recovery on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, as investors reacted to HCLTech’s quarterly earnings and renewed interest in large IT exporters. The Nifty IT index was up around 3.03% in the morning, with HCLTech, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys among the stocks attracting buyers. The gains offered some relief after a prolonged period of pressure on technology counters.

IT Giants Help the Sector Surg

Heavyweight IT stocks led the market recovery on Tuesday, October 13, with the Nifty IT index gaining over 3% intraday. HCLTech surged around 7.2%, TCS gained 6.1%, Infosys rose 3.1%, Tech Mahindra advanced 4.3%, and Coforge climbed 4.4%. Together, these five stocks accounted for approximately 79% of the index's weight as of September 2026.

HCLTech provided the main earnings-related trigger, reporting Q2 FY27 revenue of ₹35,620 crore, up 11.5% year-on-year, while net profit increased 21.2% to ₹5,132 crore. Its EBIT margin improved by 71 basis points to 18.2%, reflecting better operating efficiency.

The company also reported new deal bookings worth $3.26 billion, while advanced AI revenue surged 78% year-on-year in constant currency to $219 million. Stronger profitability, deal wins and AI growth encouraged buying across IT stocks, although global technology spending and AI-related disruption remain key concerns.

What the Latest IT Industry Data Suggest

The Indian technology industry remains a major exporter even when stock prices are weak. An IBEF summary of the RBI’s annual survey estimates that India’s software-services exports rose 8.2% to $221.4 billion in FY26. The United States accounted for 54.1% of software-services exports and Europe for 31.8%, underlining the sector’s dependence on overseas demand.

IBEF also reported that units registered with Software Technology Parks recorded an estimated $87.57 billion in exports in FY26, compared with $81.40 billion in FY25. Government and industry figures support the long-term relevance of Indian IT services, boosting investor confidence.

Risks That Could Interrupt the IT-Led Recovery

Despite the recovery in IT stocks, several risks remain. Weak discretionary spending could prompt overseas clients to delay technology projects, while AI-led automation may reduce demand for traditional IT services even as it creates new opportunities. The rally could also lose momentum if banking, consumer and broader-market stocks fail to participate. Additionally, continued foreign institutional selling, elevated interest rates and global uncertainties could put pressure on valuations despite improving quarterly earnings.

Conclusion

The sharp rise in IT shares on 13 October was supported by genuine earnings news, especially HCLTech’s 21.2% profit growth, stronger operating margin and expanding advanced-AI revenue. Buying in TCS and Infosys helped the Nifty IT index lead the market recovery and supported Nifty’s return above 22,500.Nevertheless, one session’s leadership cannot settle concerns over global technology budgets, AI-led changes in service delivery or weak broader-market structure.
