Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) shares came under selling pressure on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, although it posted strong financial results for the September quarter. The stock fell up to 6.89 per cent to ₹ 3,252.50, from its previous close of ₹ 3,490.10, a day after hitting a 52-week high. The fall comes even as consolidated net profit jumped 130.8% year-on-year to ₹454.57 crore and revenue from operations more than doubled to ₹799.66 crore.

MCX Q2 FY27 Results: Strong Revenue Growth but Higher Tax Outgo

Revenue from operations rose 113.9% YoY to around ₹800 crore, aided by increased commodity derivatives trading activity, MCX said in its November 3 financial disclosure. EBITDA surged 145.9% to Rs 664 crore. The company posted an EBITDA margin of 78% against 67.3% a year ago.

But a closer look at sequential performance reveals some pressure on earnings conversion. Profit before tax was up 22.2% on the June quarter but net profit was up only about 10%. This was mainly due to a sharp increase in tax expenses to ₹184.67 crore as against ₹109.69 crore. Effective tax rate moved up from about 21% to 29% and reported PAT margin dipped to 53.4% from 54.9%.

Why Are Investors Selling MCX Shares?

A likely reason is profit-taking after the stock's sharp run-up before the results. MCX had jumped 7.42% on November 3, closing at ₹3,490.10 ahead of the earnings announcement later in the evening. The subsequent sell-off suggests some investors took profits on the results rather than add to their exposure. The stock has gained some 87% in the past year. Such valuations are subject to continued trading activity and profit growth. And even strong results may not be enough to support further gains when expectations are already running high.

Commodity Trading Volumes Remain a Key Risk

MCX's options average daily turnover increased 224.8% YoY to ₹12 lakh crore, while futures turnover rose 50.6% to ₹62,819 crore. The number of active futures and options clients also increased to 14.98 lakh from 7.90 lakh a year earlier.

These numbers show strong business momentum, but they also raise the earnings base for future quarters. Options turnover is reported in notional terms, and revenue does not necessarily grow at the same rate. If volatility in gold, silver, crude oil and natural gas moderates, trading activity and transaction income could slow. Investors may therefore be questioning whether the recent pace of growth is sustainable.

Regulatory Developments and New Business Investments

MCX also has a regulatory issue disclosed ahead of the results. The company on September 30 said it has received a GST show-cause notice for proposed tax, interest and penalties aggregating to about ₹103.31 crore. MCX said it was working on its response, believed it had a strong case and did not expect a material impact. This is a significant tax claim which is not a settled liability and there is no evidence that it is directly connected to the fall in share price.

MCX is moving into new markets. The Ministry of Coal on October 15 issued a public consultation notice on the registration application of MCX Coal Exchange of India. The company also incorporated MCX Mineral Exchange of India on 16th October. These initiatives may open up additional revenue opportunities but the need to secure approvals, market adoption and the initial investment requirements remain important uncertainties.

What Does the Share Price Reaction Suggest?

MCX’s latest results show continued strength in its underlying business with substantial growth in revenue, operating profitability, trading volumes and client participation.

But the recent fall in its share price looks like a correction after the sharp rally in the stock. Valuations are already high and expectations are high ahead of the quarterly results and investors seem to be taking profit in the company despite strong financial performance.
