Last Updated: 14th October 2026 - 01:16 pm
Key Takeaways
- Active midcap and smallcap mutual funds had a combined ₹9.8 trillion in AUM at the end of September 2026, against ₹2.5 trillion five years earlier.
- Smallcap schemes received ₹9,039 crore of net inflows during September, while midcap schemes attracted ₹7,835 crore.
- Inflows during 2026 so far stood at approximately ₹55,300 crore for smallcap schemes and ₹51,295 crore for midcap funds.
Active midcap and smallcap mutual funds have developed into an almost ₹10-trillion segment, after a five-year expansion in both investor flows and market-linked asset values.
The two categories together managed ₹9.8 trillion at the end of September 2026, according to data reported by Business Standard. In September 2021, their combined AUM was around ₹2.5 trillion. Assets have therefore risen to nearly four times their level five years earlier.
September added another strong month of inflows. Smallcap mutual funds received a record ₹9,039 crore, while midcap schemes collected ₹7,835 crore. Together, the two categories brought in nearly ₹16,900 crore during the month.
The cumulative numbers for 2026 show a similar pattern. Smallcap funds recorded approximately ₹55,300 crore of net inflows during the year to date, while midcap funds attracted ₹51,295 crore. Largecap schemes, by comparison, recorded about ₹11,690 crore over the same period.
The expansion in AUM is not attributable solely to new investor money. Changes in the market value of securities already held by schemes also affect assets under management. Business Standard attributed the five-year increase to a combination of persistent inflows and mark-to-market gains during the broader equity-market advance.
September's wider equity-fund data also showed stronger overall participation. Net inflows into equity mutual funds rose to roughly ₹38,306 crore, up 31% from ₹29,328 crore in August.
The ₹9.8-trillion figure illustrates how much larger the midcap and smallcap fund segments have become within the domestic mutual fund industry. It is an asset-scale milestone rather than a measure of future returns; valuations, market movements, redemptions and fresh subscriptions will all continue to influence AUM.
