New Study Examines Mutual Fund Distributor Earnings
India's mutual fund distribution business has expanded over the past decade, with individual distributors recording higher earnings and a growing number of businesses operating at a larger scale.
A report by Marcellus Group, titled New Kings & Queens: India's Mutual Fund Distributors, examines changes in distributor earnings, industry participation and the economics of mutual fund distribution.
The study estimates that an individual mutual fund distributor earns gross annual commission income of approximately ₹13 lakh to ₹17 lakh in 2026.
According to the research, this represents an increase of around 50–80% compared with 2016.
After accounting for business expenses, the study estimates annual net income of approximately ₹9.5 lakh for an average distributor.
This is equivalent to about ₹79,000 per month.
These are industry estimates rather than guaranteed earnings for individual distributors.
Distributor Registrations Have Increased
The number of individual distributors registered with the Association of Mutual Funds in India has risen over the past ten years.
| Metric | FY16 | FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Registered individual MFDs | Around 71,000 | Around 1.88 lakh |
| Average commission income per active individual MFD | ₹4.7 lakh | ₹9.3 lakh |
The study estimates that approximately 1.30 lakh individual distributors were active in FY26.
The rise in registrations indicates broader participation in the distribution business, although the number of registered distributors does not directly correspond to the number of active businesses.
Income Varies Considerably Across Distributors
The study also identifies differences between smaller distributors and large distribution businesses.
Approximately 1.65 lakh distributors managing assets below ₹25 crore were estimated to earn around ₹3 lakh annually.
At the upper end of the industry, approximately 1,500 distributors managing at least ₹190 crore each were estimated to earn annual commissions of around ₹1.8 crore.
These estimates demonstrate how commission income can vary with the size and composition of assets distributed.
The distribution business also includes revenue from financial products beyond mutual funds, including insurance, alternative investments and fixed-income products.
Equity Funds Account for a Large Share of Commissions
The Marcellus study estimates that equity mutual funds account for approximately 74% of the industry's total commission pool.
Actively managed equity funds generally have higher distribution-related commission rates than certain other categories, including debt and liquid funds.
The report also identifies a growing shift towards corporate distribution structures as individual practices expand.
The number of corporate mutual fund distribution entities increased from approximately 6,500 in FY16 to 10,790 in FY26.
The findings provide a data-led assessment of the economics of India's mutual fund distribution industry, including the differences between smaller practices and established wealth management businesses.
