India’s mutual fund industry added 4.4 million net new investors in the first nine months of 2026, taking the total number of unique investors to 63.3 million at the end of September.
The pace of additions was the slowest for the corresponding nine-month period since 2023, when 3.7 million investors were added, according to industry data reported by Business Standard. The unique investor measure is based on the number of permanent account numbers, or PANs, registered across the mutual fund industry.
Investor additions have moderated after the sharp expansion seen during stronger equity-market years. Fund houses added around 10 million investors in both 2021 and 2024, periods characterised by stronger market participation. In most other post-pandemic years, annual additions have been closer to 5–6 million.
The slowdown has coincided with weaker equity-market conditions and fewer new fund launches.
New fund offers have historically been an important source of investor acquisition for asset management companies, particularly during periods of strong market sentiment. Collections through NFOs fell to around ₹1,759 crore during the April-June quarter of 2026, a five-year low, according to data cited in the report.
The moderation does not mean investor participation has stalled. The industry continues to add millions of first-time investors even as equity markets have been more volatile than during the 2024 rally.
The numbers also underline a distinction between investor-count growth and broader industry measures such as assets under management, folios and systematic investment plan contributions. A single investor can hold multiple folios, while AUM can rise or fall because of both fresh investments and changes in market value.
For fund houses, the latest figures show that the exceptionally rapid investor acquisition seen during strong bull-market phases has become harder to sustain in 2026.
