Nifty IT Jumps 2.5%: Can Wipro and Tech Mahindra Extend the Rally?
Last Updated: 15th October 2026 - 03:34 pm
The Nifty IT index rose around 2.5% in Thursday morning trading on 15 October 2026, extending an advance of roughly 9% over three sessions. The rebound followed substantial earlier underperformance and coincided with weakness in expensive AI-linked technology shares overseas. HCLTech, TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Tech Mahindra participated, although gains varied by stock and the intraday index percentage changed as trading continued.
The 2.4% reference in the headline is an intraday reading, not the full three-day return or a final closing figure. A powerful rebound can be driven by earnings, short covering, and a shift in investor positioning at the same time. It does not automatically establish the start of a prolonged uptrend.
HCLTech Q2 FY27: Profitability and AI Work Improve
HCLTech reported September-quarter revenue of ₹35,620 crore, up 11.5% year-on-year. Net income reached ₹5,132 crore, up 21.2%, while the EBIT margin improved to 18.2%, rising 1.31% sequentially. New deal bookings had a total contract value of $3.26 billion. These numbers provided investors with evidence of execution rather than relying solely on future AI expectations.
A particularly important detail was advanced-AI revenue of $219 million for the quarter, up 28.4% sequentially in constant currency and 78% year-on-year.The performance helped make HCLTech a leader in the recent sector move.
TCS Q2 FY27: Growth Continues, but Remains Gradual
TCS reported Q2 revenue of ₹73,188 crore, up 11.2% year-on-year, with a 24.0% operating margin. The company disclosed a $9.6 billion total contract value for the quarter and annualised AI revenue of about $3.1 billion, crossing 10% of overall revenue. These are meaningful signs of client spending on technology transformation.
Constant-currency revenue grew 0.5% sequentially, and contract wins moderated versus some earlier periods. The results were sufficiently reassuring for investors to revisit the sector, but they do not establish a comprehensive recovery in discretionary IT spending.
Wipro: What the Market Will Look for in the Q2 Release
Wipro has scheduled its September-quarter Q2 FY27 earnings announcement for after Indian market hours on 15 October. Its earlier guidance put IT Services revenue for the quarter in a range of $2.574–2.627 billion. Investors will watch whether performance lands near the upper end and whether the next-quarter outlook points to a broader recovery.
Deal wins, the pace of large-client spending, operating margin, AI-related investments and management commentary on discretionary projects will be as important as the headline profit. A share-price rally ahead of results also raises the risk of disappointment if the guidance merely matches expectations.
Tech Mahindra: Margin Execution and Deal Conversion Matter
Tech Mahindra has participated in the IT-sector advance, but confirmation requires sustained progress in its operating turnaround. Investors should assess telecom-related demand, execution of cost and efficiency programmes, conversion of bookings to revenue and the trend in EBIT margin when the next quarterly disclosure becomes available.
Unlike a business with a consistently high operating margin, a restructuring-led recovery can be more sensitive to project mix and one-time costs. Investors should therefore avoid extrapolating a single strong trading session into a multiyear earnings forecast.
Conclusion
HCLTech and TCS have provided credible earnings support for the Nifty IT recovery. The correction in global AI stocks may also attract attention towards cash-generating Indian IT exporters, but valuation rotation can reverse quickly. Wipro’s Q2 release and subsequent Tech Mahindra disclosures will be critical in testing whether the move can develop beyond a relief rally. Continued gains require revenue and margin evidence, not only relief from AI valuation concerns.
