Nifty Trade Setup for October 16: Nifty Jumps 1.66%, Can It Sustain Above 23,000?
Last Updated: 15th October 2026 - 06:25 pm
Nifty 50 staged a strong rally on October 15, rising 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to close at 22,997.35. The index opened at 22,671.30, touched an intraday high of 23,056.40 and recorded a low of 22,637.40. The rebound pushed Nifty closer to the psychological 23,000 mark, with buying interest visible across the market. However, the index is approaching a key resistance zone, and its ability to sustain above 23,000 will be important in determining whether the recovery can extend into the next session.
Market Breadth: Bulls Dominate as 44 Stocks Advance
Market breadth remained strongly positive, with 44 stocks advancing and only 6 declining in the Nifty 50 index. Nifty Private Bank, Services and IT were the leading sectors, indicating broad-based buying interest. The strong advance-decline ratio supports the positive short-term outlook and suggests that the rally was not limited to a few heavyweight stocks. Continued strength in banking and IT stocks could help Nifty maintain its upward momentum, although resistance near 23,000–23,077 may invite profit booking.
Nifty Technical Setup: 23,076 Resistance in Focus
Nifty 50 has moved above its short-term moving averages on the daily chart, with the index trading near the 0.618 Fibonacci retracement level around 22,974.75. The next major hurdle is 23,076.90, followed by the 23,187–23,320 zone. On the hourly chart, Nifty is trading above several short-term EMAs, supporting the recovery. A sustained move above 23,076.90 could strengthen bullish momentum, while a rejection near this level may lead to consolidation around 22,850–22,900.

RSI and Momentum Indicators: Buying Momentum Improves
The daily RSI has risen to 49.94, approaching the neutral 50 mark and signalling an improvement in momentum. The hourly RSI at 67.42 indicates strong buying pressure, while the 15-minute RSI at 62.01 suggests that short-term momentum remains positive despite some cooling from higher levels. These readings support the recovery, but the index is nearing resistance. A sustained move above 23,000, followed by a breakout above 23,076.90, would provide stronger confirmation of continued upside momentum.
Key Levels to Track for Nifty on October 16
Nifty’s strong rally and positive market breadth have improved the near-term outlook. A sustained move above 23,076.90 could open the way towards 23,187–23,320. However, the index is approaching an important resistance zone, and the daily RSI is only just below 50. Failure to sustain the gains may trigger consolidation around 22,850–22,900. A break below this support zone could weaken the recovery and bring lower levels back into focus.
