Nifty 50 extended its recovery on October 16, rising 148.80 points, or 0.65%, to close at 23,146.15, according to the daily chart. The index opened at 23,065.10, touched a high of 23,149.85 and recorded a low of 22,913.80. The rebound helped Nifty sustain its position above the 23,000 mark and move further above its short-term moving averages. However, the index is approaching resistance near 23,300, while mixed market breadth suggests that further upside may require stronger participation from heavyweight stocks.

Market Breadth: Buyers Gain a Slight Edge

Market breadth was nearly balanced, with 26 stocks advancing and 24 declining in the Nifty 50 index. The marginally positive breadth indicates slightly stronger buying participation, although the overall market advance was not supported by a decisive majority of constituents. Nifty India Digital, Nifty IT and Nifty Media remained the leading sectors, keeping the short-term sentiment constructive but warranting confirmation from broader participation.

Nifty Technical Setup: 23,300 Resistance in Focus

Nifty 50 is trading above its short-term daily EMAs near 22,780.22 and 22,892.10, supporting the near-term recovery. However, the next hurdle is the daily EMA around 23,313.93, followed by resistance near 23,565.60. On the hourly chart, the index is holding above several moving averages, although the recent sharp rise has pushed momentum into elevated territory. A sustained move above 23,300 could strengthen the bullish setup, while a fall below 23,076.90 may weaken the recovery and invite renewed selling pressure.

RSI and Momentum Indicators: Bulls Retain Short-Term Advantage

The daily RSI has improved to 52.81, moving above the neutral 50 mark and indicating a positive shift in momentum. The hourly RSI at 72.64 suggests strong buying pressure but also signals that the index may be vulnerable to short-term profit booking. Meanwhile, the 15-minute RSI at 63.22 indicates that intraday momentum remains positive. These readings favour the bulls in the near term, although consolidation near resistance would be a healthy development after the recent recovery.

Key Levels to Track for Nifty on October 19

Nifty’s close above 23,000 and daily RSI above 50 support a positive near-term outlook. A sustained move above 23,314 could open the way towards 23,565.60. However, mixed market breadth and an elevated hourly RSI suggest that profit booking cannot be ruled out. If Nifty slips below 23,076.90, the recovery may lose momentum, bringing the 22,892 support zone into focus.
