Indian equity benchmarks ended Wednesday's trading session in negative territory as investors turned cautious amid elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign fund outflows and selling pressure in heavyweight financial stocks. The decline came a day after domestic markets witnessed a sharp recovery led by IT stocks.

The Nifty 50 began the session on a weak note but attempted to recover during early trading, climbing to an intraday high of 22,757.95. However, the recovery failed to sustain as selling in banking and financial stocks dragged the index lower.

By the closing bell, the Sensex had declined 251.89 points, or 0.34%, to settle at 72,781.89, while the Nifty 50 slipped approximately 0.44% to close at 22,622.70.

Wednesday's weakness followed Tuesday's strong performance, when the Sensex had rallied 1,109.10 points, and the Nifty 50 gained 358.60 points.

Broader Markets Ended in Red

Selling pressure was not restricted to large-cap stocks, as broader market indices also ended the session in negative territory.
The Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.08%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped 0.32%.

Sectoral Performance: Nifty Pharma and Financial Services Index Decline

Sectoral trends remained mixed on Wednesday, with pharmaceutical and financial services index facing selling pressure.
The Nifty Pharma and Nifty Financial Services index lost over 1%. In contrast, the Nifty IT index extended gains for the second day in a row. The Nifty Energy index emerged as the strongest sectoral performer, advancing 1.46%.

Market Breadth Remains Positive Despite Benchmark Decline

Of the 3,667 stocks traded on the NSE, 2,024 advanced, 1,537 declined and 106 remained unchanged.

Meanwhile, 70 stocks touched their 52-week highs, compared with 64 stocks that recorded fresh 52-week lows.

A total of 133 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, while 83 stocks touched their lower circuit limits.

Crude Oil Near $106 Keeps Investors Cautious

International crude oil prices remained a key concern for domestic equity markets, with Brent crude hovering around $106 per barrel.
Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continued to create uncertainty over global energy supplies. For India, which depends heavily on imported crude oil, sustained high prices can increase the country's import expenditure and add pressure on inflation.

Industries such as aviation, paints, chemicals and transportation are particularly sensitive to higher energy costs, as rising input expenses can affect their operating margins.

Continued Foreign Fund Outflows Add to Market Pressure

Foreign institutional investor selling remained another factor influencing market sentiment.

On October 13, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold Indian equities worth ₹1,305.13 crore on a net basis, extending their selling streak to 13 consecutive trading sessions.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, remained buyers, purchasing equities worth ₹2,439.24 crore.

Rupee Strengthens Against the Dollar, But Equities Remain Weak

The Indian rupee extended its recovery against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by recent measures from the Reserve Bank of India aimed at easing pressure on the domestic currency.

The rupee strengthened to approximately ₹95.14 against the dollar, compared with levels above ₹95.28 in the preceding session.

European Markets Advance

European stock markets traded higher on Wednesday, October 14, with major indices recording gains as the trading session continued.

Germany's DAX rose 153.03 points, or 0.61%, to 25,412.93, while France's CAC 40 advanced 46.03 points, or 0.59%, to 7,873.66.
The UK's FTSE 100 gained 41.98 points, or 0.39%, to trade at 10,692.31.

US Stock Futures Show Mixed Trend Ahead of Opening

US stock index futures presented a mixed picture on Wednesday, indicating a cautious opening for Wall Street.
Dow Jones futures advanced 210 points, or 0.40%, to 52,145, while S&P 500 futures gained 15 points, or 0.19%, to 7,870.75.
However, technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 futures declined 19.25 points, or 0.06%, to 30,772.25.
